“Just calling it as I see it,” she said airily, waving her hand in the air as she walked to the door.

An uncomfortable sensation rolled through the pit of Zach’s stomach. Not only had Martha been right, Kurt had a revolving door.

“Emma Hartman,” Martha announced, ushering her in.

As Emma walked towards his desk, he couldn’t help but feel sorry for her. She looked exhausted, and though it was apparent she’d tried to cover dark circles around her eyes with make up, they were easy to see.

“Hello, Emma. Please, take a seat.”

“Thanks,” she said with a weak smile.

“How can I help you?”

“Help me?”

“Advise you. As I told you, I have nothing open in this department.”

“Oh, right...can you answer some questions?”

“Sure. Ask away.”

“Is there much difference between working in film development and television development? I mean, I know the nuts and bolts differences, but the actual day-to-day stuff, is that very different?”

“I covered this in one of my lectures. Perhaps you weren’t there that day,” he replied, raising an eyebrow. “I’ll give you the bullet points.”

THOUGH HER HEAD THROBBEDand she still had a touch of nausea, she found herself mesmerized. And it wasn’t just because of his sexy good looks. He spoke with a quiet authority that made her toes curl.

“Does that answer your question?” he asked, snapping her out of her daze.

“Yes, thank you. Uh...Zach...I’m sorry I was so crazy yesterday morning. I was on a high, you know, the last day of school and everything.”

“No problem, and I apologize if I came on too strong. I probably did. As I said at the time, I didn’t mean to upset you.”

“It was a bit odd,” she muttered, dropping her eyes as her face flushed with the memory. “What you said—it was the last thing I expected. I didn’t know how to react.”

“Since we’re being candid,” he began slowly, “and don’t get mad when I say this—“

“I’m too tired to get mad,” she interjected with a sigh. “I was out late last night and I’m still zonked, but you probably know that.”

“It was hard to miss,” he said with a grin. “Perhaps I should keep my thoughts to myself—at least for the moment. I wouldn’t want to take advantage of your weakened state. Besides, you’re in my office. It wouldn’t be appropriate.”

“But there’s no-one here, and I was the one who opened up the conversation and made it personal. Please tell what were you going to say?”

“Are you sure? There’s an old adage, never ask a question, the answer to which you may not want to hear...or something like that.”

“I might feel like crap, but at least I’m prepared now. Zach, please...are you about to make me another offer? If you are, I want to hear it.”
