CHAPTER TWO

HER FACE STILL FLUSHED, and wishing she had a smartass comeback, Emma tried to back up and speed away, but try as she might she couldn’t get the car into gear.

“You need to have your foot on the brake, but you shouldn’t drive until you’ve calmed down,” Zach declared. “I’m sorry if I upset you. It wasn’t my intention.”

“Don’t flatter yourself. I’m not upset.”

“I beg to differ,” he said, jumping into the back seat.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” she shouted. “You can’t just climb into my car!”

“You’re not leaving until you take a deep breath and relax, not unless you want me along for the ride. Then you’d have to bring me back.”

“Why are you doing this?”

“I’d never forgive myself if you took off and wrapped yourself around a telephone pole.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about! I’m fine!”

“You can’t lie to me, Emma. You’re flustered, and as I said, I’m sorry about that.”

“Just get the fuck out of my car!”

“Nope. Not until you’ve calmed down, and you really do need to stop with the swearing.”

“Fine, suit yourself, but I’m not bringing you back here,” she spat, putting her foot on the brake and slipping the car into gear.

Gunning the accelerator and peeling out of the parking space, she sped towards the exit, but a moment later, she was forced to stop. There were several cars ahead of her waiting to pass through the guard gate.

“Dammit! This is so annoying,” she exclaimed, throwing her hands in the air.

“I thought you said you weren’t upset,” Zach remarked, leaning through the console. “You really need to take a breath.”

“You are the most insufferable, exasperating man I’ve ever had the displeasure of meeting. You were obnoxious in the classroom too. Is being incredibly irritating what you do, or should I say, who you are?”

“Emma, think about what you just said. I was the teacher, and you were the student. It was my job to teach and your job to listen, but you were either doodling in your notebook, or giving me a blank stare as if I was putting you to sleep. How the hell you made it through is a mystery. Mind you, your grades weren’t great. You should have applied yourself, but apparently your father never taught you the value of education. ”

“As it happens I’m meeting him for lunch, and I’m going to tell him all about your so-called offer. Now get out of my car.”

“I’m honestly not trying to be obnoxious, insufferable or exasperating, I’m genuinely concerned, and I repeat, I didn’t mean to upset you. Please, Emma, just take a deep breath and settle down before you drive off.”
