THE FOLLOWING MORNING, they said goodbye to the Bel Air hotel, but enjoyed lunch at a bustling Italian restaurant on Rodeo Drive, then spent the afternoon shopping. By the time Zach dropped her off at her condominium it was early evening. She had several shopping bags, and he was fortunate to find a parking space near her complex.

“It feels weird being back here,” she remarked, standing at her front door and searching for her keys. “It’s as if what we shared at the Bel Air was real, and this isn’t, though it should be the other way around.”

“I know what you mean,” he said, wishing they were still there.

“Maybe I shouldn’t say this, but I don’t want to say goodbye,” she said sadly, gazing up at him. “This will probably sound ridiculous, but I miss you already.”

“Let’s talk inside,” he suggested, picking up the shopping bags. “I’m sure your neighbors have no interest in your love life.”

“Or too much!” she whispered as she unlocked her door.

Holding it open for him as he carried in her shopping bags, he glanced around and nodded approvingly.

“Emma, this is great!” he declared, placing the bags on her coffee table, and moving across to the sliding glass doors. “I wouldn’t have guessed you’d have such a fantastic outlook over the Pacific.”

“Are you sure we can’t spend the night together?” she pleaded, moving up to him and curling her arms around his waist. “I won’t be able to sleep.”

“I have to be in Jerry’s office early in the morning, and there are some things I have to get done before then.”

“Boo hoo.”

“I have some homework for you though,” he said, taking her hand and leading her to the couch. “Let’s sit for a minute.”

“Homework? What kind of homework?”

“I want to know about your fantasies, and that includes the clothes you’d like to wear, and I want you to make three lists. Fantasies you definitely want to experience, the ones you’re not sure about, and those that are off limits.”

“Lord, I have so many,” she muttered, rolling her eyes.

“The more the merrier can apply here! There’s one more thing. Before I go, tell me what happened with Angelo?”

“Angelo? I was drawn to him because he was a real take-charge Italian.”

“He sounds just right for you. I’m surprised it didn’t work out, though not all men who are dominant are dominants...if you know what I mean.”

“I know exactly what you mean, and I have a problem with actors. I was hoping with him it would be different, but it wasn’t.”

“What’s the problem?”

“I can’t shake the feeling they’re with me because of my father.”

“Ah, I can understand that.”

“I don’t think Angelo was, but it was in the back of my mind. There were a couple of other issues, but that was the main thing.“

“Thanks for telling me, and now I must run, but I’ll call you later.”

As they walked to her door, he wanted to wrap her up and fervently kiss her, though he knew if he did they’d probably end up in her bedroom. Giving her a quick peck, he stepped into the hall and headed for the elevator. But as he reached it, a frown crossed his brow.

She’d been worried about Angelo’s motives because her father was Justin Hartman.

Jerry wanted him too.

No matter how much pressure Jerry put on him, Zach was determined he would not allow his relationship with Emma to be used to cajole her father into working for Continental.
