CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

THE FOLLOWING MORNINGZach was stirred from sleep by his cellphone. Groggily opening his eyes, he picked up the phone and squinted at the screen. It was Anna Lee. Rarely did she call early in the morning and he felt compelled to answer.

“Hey, Anna, is everything okay?”

“Zach, I’m so glad you picked up. My car’s about to arrive and I’m so excited I just had to call. You’ll never guess.”

“You’re probably right.”

“Remember I mentioned I’d be joining Stewart and his wife at that charity thing at the Beverly Hills Hotel last night?”

Zach liked Stewart Baxter. He was Anna Lee’s agent, and often took her to events where she could be seen by the people who mattered.

“Vaguely, what about it?”

“Guess who was there? Angelo Frattiano, and he was alone!”

“Lucky you. Did you meet him?”

“Meet him! Oh, my, gosh, Zach, he spent the whole night talking to me and brought me home.”

“That sounds promising.”

“He’s just like I thought he’d be, and he reminds me of you in a way, except I’m attracted to him. Sorry, that came out wrong, but you know what I mean.”

“Yes, hon, I know what you mean, but you need to take a deep breath. Don’t go jumping into anything. Take your time.”

“You’re right, but Zach, I like him. I mean, I really like him. He’s a big star, but he doesn’t act like one. He’s so normal. Did you know he comes from a small town on the outskirts of Chicago, and he’s so sweet, but he’s also kind of, what’s the word?”

“Strong?”

“Yes, strong. I feel like I could lean on him the way I lean on you.”

“Did he ask you out?”

“When he walked me to my door he gave me the best hug ever, then said he’ll call me tomorrow to make plans.”

“That’s wonderful, Anna. Keep me posted, and let me know if you need any advice.”

“Don’t worry, I will. I sure as hell don’t want to screw this up.”
