“No-one fucks with me,” he grumbled, stirring sugar into his second cup of coffee, “not even the great Jerry Goldman.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE

AT 10:55 A.M., EMMAdrove her car into the parking garage of Continental Pictures and rolled to a stop in front of the valet service. Picking up her satchel, she climbed from the car, accepted the ticket from the eager young man, and walked nervously into the elevator. As it slowed to a gentle stop on the second floor, she stepped out and hurried down the hall to Zach’s office.

“Hi again, Martha,” she said with a smile as she walked in.

“Have a seat. I’ll let him know you’re here.”

Stewart Baxter had responded to Zach’s deal memo for Moonbeams and Fairy Dust, and he was reading the details when Martha knocked and poked her head in. He was almost relieved to lift his eyes from the complex document.

“Emma Hartman is here.”

“Send her in, please.”

The moment Emma entered his office, he wanted to take her in his arms and tell her how gorgeous she was. Her hair was swept back, and dressed in a charcoal grey suit and pale pink shirt, she looked professional, but still ravishing.

“Hello,” he said warmly, willing his cock to go back to sleep. “Have a seat and I’ll go over a few things, then Martha will take you up to Jerry’s office.”

As she sat down, he explained the daily schedule, described the personalities of his team, and finished by telling her to take copious notes at the meetings she attended.

“You’ll only retain about twenty-five percent of what you hear, and you’ll need to go over what you’ve jotted down every night so you’ll retain it. For the first two weeks you’ll be working with me, then you’ll be with someone else.”

“Really? With you?” she exclaimed with a mischievous grin. “That’s the best news yet.”

“Emma,” he said solemnly, dropping his voice, “remember what I said. There’s nothing personal between us, and it’s written in stone.”

“Yes, sorry,” she said hastily.

“One word of advice about Jerry. He’ll accept someone for who they are, but he won’t accept someone trying to be someone they’re not.”

“I’m suddenly nervous again.”

“Tell him. He’ll respect that,” Zach said, pushing back from his desk. “Time to walk the plank. I’ll see you out.”

As they headed into Martha’s area, she stopped typing and glanced up from her computer.
