“Are you absolutely sure about this?”

“Of course, but we can’t waste time. Martha, give me your scarf, then call the lobby guard and ask him to meet us outside the door of Jerry Goldman’s office, but don’t tell him why. Then stay here with Anna and bolt the door behind us,” he added as Martha gave him the scarf. “Don’t leave until you hear from us.”

“Please be careful,” Anna called as Angelo and Zach hurried away, but they were already gone, and Martha was locking the door.

WITH ZACH HOLDING HISphone at his ear, he and Angelo marched swiftly down the hall.

“It’s gone quiet,” Zach muttered under his breath. “Shit.”

“Better quiet than screams or gunshots,” Angelo remarked. “I don’t think he has a gun. He’d be waving it around, but you never know. Where can we speak with the security guard privately?”

“Let me think.”

“Think fast.”

Turning a corner and approaching Jerry’s office, they saw Lou, the lobby guard, stepping off the elevator.

“The stair, through that exit door,” Zach said quickly.

Signaling Lou to step into the stairwell, Angelo and Zach hurried forward to join him.

“What’s wrong?” Lou asked anxiously. “Please don’t tell me it’s Kurt Fielding.”

“It is,” Zach replied, “but how do you know?”

“Dammit! I was dealing with a group of people when I saw him come in. He looked in a terrible state, blood on his face, and sort of limping. I was going to stop him but I was distracted for a second. When I looked back he was gone. He must have slipped by me. I’m sorry, Mr. Taylor.”

“This isn’t your fault,” Zach assured him. “Do you have a key to Mr. Goldman’s suite?”

“I sure do,” he replied, lifting a ring holding several keys from his pocket and singling out one in particular. “This master opens the double doors into the reception area and his office.”

“Give it to me,” Angelo said briskly. “After I go in, stand outside and don’t let anyone through. I don’t care what they say, no-one comes in, and that includes you.”

“Can you tell me what’s going on?”

“No time,” Angelo replied, taking the key. “Go and stand guard right now. We’ll be there in a minute.”

“It’s still quiet,” Zach muttered, looking at his phone as Lou left the stairwell. “No conversation, nothing. How will we do this?”

“It won’t be difficult. Just do exactly what I tell you.”

“It won’t be difficult?” Zach repeated skeptically. “I hope those aren’t famous last words.”

“Trust me.”

“I don’t have much choice, but when this is over you’re going to tell me how you know about this stuff.”

“Deal. What’s in the outer office, then I’ll tell you what to do.”

JERRY WAS PURPOSELYtaking his time searching through his safe hoping Kurt would pass out. He was sweating profusely, a cut on his forehead was bleeding, and it was obvious he was in pain.

“I think this is about fifteen thousand,” Jerry declared, pretending to study a bundle of cash in his hand.

“That’s all you’ve got?” Kurt yelled. “Bullshit.”
