“There’s a petty cash box in my desk. I don’t use it very much and I can’t recall which drawer it’s in. May I look for it?”

“Yeah, go on, and I need some water. It’s fucking hot in here.”

“There’s plenty of water in my drinks cabinet by the window.”

“I’m watching both of you,” Kurt warned, glaring at Emma as he headed across the room. “Don’t get any ideas! If you do, she’ll be the one I’ll cut!”

“KURT JUST ASKED FORsome water,” Zach whispered as he and Angelo left the stairwell. “It’s hard to be sure, but his voice sounds different, almost high-pitched.”

“He’s stressing,” Angelo said knowingly.

As they approached the double doors, Lou gave no outward appearance of worry.

“Your demeanor is perfect,” Angelo said quietly, touching his arm. “Do you know if the door squeaks?”

“It doesn’t,” Zach interjected. “Something like that would drive Jerry nuts.”

“Good,” Angelo muttered, slipping the key in the lock. “Lou, no matter what you hear, don’t come in.”

“That won’t be easy, but I’ll stay put.”

Slowly opening the door a crack, Angelo peered inside. It was deserted.

“Are you ready, Zach?”

“As I’ll ever be,” Zach replied, wishing his heart would stop its heavy thumping.

Silently moving inside and softly closing the door, Angelo gently locked it behind them, then scrutinized the room. Zach had his instructions, and as Angelo walked softly across to the door to Jerry’s office to listen, Zach moved to Kevin’s desk, carefully turned the lamp on its side, then scattered a pile of papers around the floor.

“Perfect. Now give me your tie,” Angelo whispered, creeping up to him, “then hide behind the couch.”

“I won’t ask what you’ll be doing with this,” Zach breathed as he pulled it off and handed it over, then moved to the brown leather Chesterfield couch and ducked down.

Picking up the large bronze statue in the center of the glass top coffee table, Angelo held it in the air, then threw it down with all his might. Though the deafening crash made Zach bury his head in his arms, it didn’t faze Angelo. Quickly ducking out of sight behind a potted plant near the door to Jerry’s office, like a great cat, he prepared to pounce.
