“No, I haven’t had a chance.”

“I will,” Jerry said, returning to his desk and picking up the desk phone.

“If you need me, I’ll be back in the reception area with Kurt,” Angelo said. “If his muscles start cramping he’ll panic, and he’s coked up. I don’t want him having a heart attack.”

“Emma, what you did was brilliant,” Zach declared as Angelo left the office, “and you were amazing, Kevin. You tipped off Martha. You’re a hero. You set this whole rescue in motion.”

“I d-did?” he stammered.

“Absolutely.”

“It was the only thing I c-could think of. I’m just g-glad Martha f-figured it out. S-sorry, I c-can’t stop sh-shaking.”

“You have nothing to be sorry about. You were taken hostage by a lunatic waving a knife around. Take another drink. It will help.”

“The police are on their way,” Jerry announced from his desk. “Thanks to all of you, Kurt will be arrested and charged, I’m okay, and so are the rest of the people in this building. Rest assured I’ll find a way to show my gratitude.”

“It’s Angelo who deserves most of the credit,” Zach replied. “If it hadn’t been for him—”

“He may have been the leader, but it was a team effort. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a few words to say to that scumbag out there. Would you like to join me, Kevin?”

“Actually, I think I do,” Kevin replied, pushing himself up from the chair, “and you were right, that drink helped.”

“You can even give him a slap if you want.”

“I’m not a violent person, but right now, nothing would give me greater pleasure.”

“ALONE AT LAST,” ZACHsaid softly, taking hold of Emma’s hand. “What you did was brave and brilliant, and I’m so proud of you, but a part of me wishes you hadn’t taken the chance. If he’d caught you—“

“If he’d caught me, so be it. You and Angelo took a much bigger risk, and isn’t that what life is about? Taking risks?”

“Yes, and sometimes they pay off, sometimes they don’t. Today we got lucky.”
