AFTER KURT WAS TAKENinto custody, everyone was required to give a statement, and Jerry made the conference room available so they didn’t have to traipse down to the police station. Knowing word would probably leak out to the press, Emma called her father so he wouldn’t worry, but he arrived unannounced to see her.

After he’d hugged her and made sure she really was okay, he made his way to Jerry’s office. The scene was chaos and the hall was taped off, but Jerry spotted him and they headed to the projection room where they could have some privacy. After Jerry relayed the details of the dramatic events, Justin was shaken to the core.

“I can’t believe I almost lost my little girl today,” he muttered solemnly. “I guess we never know what’s around the corner.”

“No, we don’t, and forgive me, but I must tell you about a script I’ve picked up.”

“Now?”

“As you just said, we never know what’s around the corner, and this is something special,” he declared, then taking a breath, he lowered his voice and added. “To be perfectly frank, talking about work will help me through this. I need to work. It was hell in my office with that maniac.”

“Ah, yeah, I get it.”

“So...Angelo has read it and wants in,” Jerry continued. “Even if he hadn’t been a superhero today, I’d give it to him with my blessing. With Anna Lee Pickford as his love interest, it will be a home run. I’m putting it on the fast track, and I’d love you to be involved.”

“This must be a day for miracles,” Justin declared.

“Excuse me?”

“First and foremost, my girl’s okay. Work-wise, Angelo and I have been looking for a project. He called me and told me he’d found it, but his agent, Stewart Baxter, told him to keep it hush-hush. I assume it’s the one you’re talking about. What’s it called?”

”Moonbeams and Fairy Dust. There’s nothing whimsical about it, but the title is genius.”

“Who found it?”

“Zach Taylor.”

“He’s got a helluva record. I’ll read it tonight.”

ANNA AND MARTHA HADbeen anxiously waiting in Zach’s office. When Emma, Zach and Angelo finally returned, they sat mesmerized as Zach recounted their confrontation with Kurt.

“There’s a movie in there somewhere,” Anna exclaimed. “In fact, it’s similar to the office scene in Moonbeams and Fairy Dust.”

“You’re not wrong,” Zach remarked, “but Angelo, you promised to tell me how you learned that self-defense stuff. Are you a martial arts guy?”

“I want to know too,” Anna insisted.

“The problem is, if I tell you, I’ll have to kill you,” he said, lowering his voice, “and I’m not kidding.”

“Uh-huh, sure,” she retorted, rolling her eyes.

“I can tell you some of it. I was a martial arts champion in college, but I also did well in languages and I’m a marksman.”

“Good grief,” Zach muttered. “Why are you an actor? You should be working for the FBI or CIA.”

“Yeah, well, they both tried to recruit me. I turned them down, but I was approached by another organization. An independent, international force not bound by the restrictions in government agencies.”

“I just got chills,” Anna murmured. “Were you a spy?”

“Not exactly. I was called an operative. I had assignments here in the US and Europe.”

“No wonder Kurt was a piece of cake,” Zac remarked.”Why did you quit? It sounds ideal for your skill set.”

“I loved the adrenalin rush, but you can’t live that life and have a family. I want to be a husband and father more than I want to risk my neck chasing bad guys across the globe.”

“Wow. That’s heavy,” Emma muttered. “Have you ever thought about fictionalizing some of your experiences?”
