ALONE IN STEPHANIE’Scomfortable pool house, Stella stared at the phone. Nothing she’d said to her husband was true. She wouldn’t be going to the party until around around seven o’clock, and she wasn’t busy working. In spite of Stephanie’s kind invitation to hang out with her in the main house, Stella needed space and she’d spent the day by herself. But she knew she had to call him to check in. The conversation had been short, but uncomfortable, though she’d almost laughed when he’d said,After the party we’ve got some important matters to talk about.

But her anxiety was growing.

She knew him.

When she told him she’d be filing for divorce he’d be enraged.

It was a frightening thought.

She needed to talk to the only person who could make her feel better.

Lifting her phone from the coffee table, she called Matt.

“Hello.”

Hearing his deep, mellow voice, she felt her stress and tension melt away.

“Hi, handsome.”

“How’s my Goddess?” he breathed. “I’ve been thinking about you all day.”

“Better now I’m talking to you. Why are you whispering?”

“There are people everywhere, but I’m heading up to my room so I can have some privacy. This place is a madhouse. Tell me, how did things go with John? Has he come home?”

“Yes, but I didn’t see him, I just spoke to him briefly on the phone. Matt, I have news. I should have called earlier but I needed to get my head around a few things.”

“That’s completely understandable. What’s going on?”

“When I got home this morning I packed a bag and moved into Stephanie’s pool house.”

“Wow. That’s, uh, that’s a big deal. Are you okay?”

“It’s nerve-racking, but yeah, I’m okay. Relieved more than anything, but I’m worried about what John will do when I tell him I’m leaving him. He has a terrible temper.”

“You know I’m here for you, and if you want me with you when you talk to John just say the word.”

“I think that might make things worse. Even if you said you were at my side for moral support, I doubt he’d see it that way. And he’s kind of your boss, isn’t he?”

“Not really.”

“Couldn’t he make things difficult for you?”

“He could try, but without me the show would tank, and he knows that. But Stella, I don’t like the idea of you seeing him alone.”

“I don’t think I have a choice...unless I ask Stephanie or Stewart to be there.”

“Regardless, after you tell him, don’t go to Stephanie’s. He may not know you’re there now, but that’s probably the first place he’d look. Come to my place. He’d never expect you to be here, and I’ve got security up the kazoo.”

“You’re right!” Stella exclaimed. “He has no idea we even know each other. That’s a great idea. Thank you, but I guess you should be getting back to your party preparations.”

“Sadly this is true. God only knows what I’ll find when I go back down there. But I’ll be seeing you soon, and remember, you’re not alone.”

“Thank you, I know, and I’m very grateful...more than I can say. Bye, Matt.

“Bye, Stella.”

Ending the call, she stretched out on the couch, closed her eyes and willed the time to pass. She couldn’t wait to see Matt again, and as far as John was concerned, he could go straight to hell.
