“It’s more what I didn’t do. I refused to lower my eyes,” he said emphatically.

“Seriously?”

“Considering how much money she spent on her implants I’m sure she was deeply disappointed. But they couldn’t be more beautiful than your babies,” he murmured, running his hands over her breasts, “and yours came free.”

“You’re such a smooth talker,” she said with a laugh.

“All kidding aside, she’ll be at the party tonight, and if she makes another play for me, I swear, I’ll—“

“You’ll come straight to me and kiss me passionately in front of everyone,” Stephanie declared, cutting him off and grinning up at him.

“See how brilliant you are? Yes! That’s exactly what I’ll do!”

“Okay, Mister, that’s a plan, but I need to finish getting ready. Let me go or I’ll never get out of here.”

“On one condition,” he said, his breath hot in her ear. “You have to dress in one of those leather things tonight.”

“Deal. Now I really have to get myself together. Stella will be walking in any minute. Tia will be picking us up at seven.”

“And Jerry should be here soon,” he said, reluctantly releasing her. “I have to get changed.”

“I think I just heard the back door. That will be Stella. I’ll see you at Matt’s,” she said hastily, picking up her jacket and bag, then pecking him on the cheek, she hurried away.

Moving down the hall and upstairs to their bedroom, he thought about how lucky he was. Stephanie was his saving grace. Suddenly, the inkling of an idea began to form in his head. He paused for a moment, then nodded. He knew exactly what he was going to do.

CHAPTER FORTY-THREE

Party Night

IN THE GUEST SUITEbeing used for the fashion show, Tia and the models were in one room having their hair and makeup done, while Stephanie and Stella were in another with the lingerie. In spite of the excitement, Stella had been reserved. Considering the situation with her husband it was no surprise.

“Do you want to talk?” Stephanie finally asked. “We have a few minutes before we need to start dressing the girls.”

“I’ll be seeing John soon and I’m dreading it,” Stella said with a heavy sigh.

“Ah, I see. It won’t be easy, but I suspect it won’t be nearly as bad as you think, and you won’t be alone. Telling him here will force him to keep his cool. Just make sure Matt is standing outside whatever room you use.”
