“That’s a given. Matt and one of his security men. But I’m surprised John’s not here yet. Maybe he arrived and the girl checking in the guests missed him, or she forgot to text me and let me know.”

A knock on the door caught their attention.

“Who is it?” Stephanie called, walking quickly across the room.

“Matt. Can I say hello?”

Hearing his voice, Stella’s heart skipped a beat and she broke into a happy smile.

“Of course,” Stephanie said, opening the door. “The models are in the other room finishing their hair and makeup. How is it down there?”

“Barely controlled chaos,” he said with a grin as he walked in, “but everyone seems to be having a great time. Mandy’s done a fabulous job. There hasn’t been a single crisis. Well, not yet! Does anyone here need anything?”

“I think we’re all okay,” Stella replied, moving towards him, “but thanks for asking.”

“The girls know they’re welcome to enjoy the party after the show, but there are some lecherous actors down there. They should keep their guard up, and Stella, I’ll be happy to act as your personal bodyguard. Fear not, fair lady, you will be safe with me.”

“I hope not,” she quipped, then laughed out loud.

Seeing the sparks between them, Stephanie felt a wave of relief. The coming days would be hellish for Stella, and she wouldn’t be facing them alone. Matt was crazy about her.

DOWNSTAIRS IN MATT’Sden, Tony was doing his best to keep Heather’s nerves at bay. Additional chairs had been brought, and after much discussion, they finally had decided where she should stand.

“Tony, I know this is last minute,” she began hesitantly, “and if you think it’s a bad idea just tell me, but I want to change my name. I’ve always been known as Heather Ramsey, Kent Ramsey’s daughter. I want to be my own person.”

“But your father’s a huge star. His fame will be an asset.”

“That’s the whole point!” she exclaimed. “If I start putting out hit songs I have to know it’s because I’m good enough, not because of him. Trust me, he’d try to take the credit and steal the limelight.”

“Ah, I see.”

“But if I’m not using the name Ramsey—“

“It’s okay, I get it,” Tony said, cutting her off. “Do you have a name in mind?”

“Yes! You know Tia is known only as Tia. I want to be known as Lark, no last name. What do you think?”

He took a breath, then slowly smiled.

“It’s instantly memorable and it fits. It’s perfect. You can introduce yourself tonight as Lark.”

“Thank you!” she exclaimed, throwing her arms around his neck. “I’m so relieved.”

“See how easy it can be? Communication gets things done, not conniving and schemes. Tonight, Lark will be born.”

MATT MOVED THROUGHthe crowd, chatting easily with his guests. Famous faces were everywhere, but when Jennifer Olsen walked into the formal lounge, all eyes were focused on her.

She had arrived alone, offering fodder for gossip, but she glided through the crowd like the Queen she considered herself to be. Quickly marching across the large room to greet her, Matt kissed her on the cheek like an old friend and thanked her for coming.

In seconds they were surrounded by those who knew her, a few who thought they did, and many who wanted to. As he quietly moved away, allowing her to hold court, the stunningly beautiful actress took it all in stride.

But outside the night was ominous.

Heavy clouds hiding the moon promised rain, and the air was cold...
