He nodded.

“How do we know?” I asked.

Luca and Gavin shared a look.

“We only know as much as the team that’s researching tells Daniel,” Noah answered, but my attention was still fixed on the other two. What were they thinking?

“How’s training for your mission going?” Vince asked.

I turned to him as Sky started nodding. “It’s good.”

“I’ve been practicing self-defense and feel good about it,” I added.

Noah smiled, and I had to fight to keep the smile off my lips.

“That’s a relief. I think we can all relax a bit more knowing you have some tricks up your sleeve,” Vince said with a wink.

“When are you guys starting?” Luca asked.

“She’s got to work on her mental shield still,” Noah answered.

Luca looked between me, Sky, and Noah. “You’re training her on that?”

“He’s been working with us. My mom thought he would help since he just got his own recently,” Gavin answered.

“You’re working on yours too?” Vince asked Gavin who nodded.

“Huh. I didn’t realize how many of you were training together.” Luca sounded hurt.

“It all just kind of happened. One thing added onto another. Sky and I have been working on things we’ll need to know to be convincing in our jobs when we start the mission. He helped me with self-defense, and Noah did too. When he was there Tessa asked him to help with the mental shields, so Gavin joined since he needed to build his too.”

Vince and Luca raised their brows at each other in silent communication.

“Please, it’s not like we’re trying to exclude you. If either of you needs to work on any of these, you’re more than welcome to join.” I gave each of them a stern look hoping they’d stop thinking we were going behind their back.

“I’m good,” Vince shrugged. “Mandy and Wes helped me with my mental shield when my powers first came in. It was pretty easy since my ability is so physical, but I guess it’s good for anyone who can manipulate us or get in our heads.”

“So, that's a real thing?”

We talked about whether it was possible someone messed with my dad’s memory the day he was parked in front of the AS’s headquarters, but it was never confirmed that anyone had that type of ability.

He shrugged. “It’s just protection.”

I nodded and hoped I wouldn’t ever have to find out. The thought of someone being able to control or change things in my mind made me sick.

“My parents have had me in martial arts classes since I could walk, and my shield is just fine,” Luca added.

“Really?” I gasped.

“You think they would have let me get out of that training?” he asked with narrowed eyes.

I shook my head. “No, I meant the martial arts. You never told me about that.”

He raised one shoulder in a half-hearted shrug. “I stopped going to regular classes a few years ago but make sure I stay in shape. It’s not something I ever really enjoyed, but I knew it was necessary.”

“That’s because I was always the best, and you hated it,” Sky teased.

“You did it too?” I asked.
