“I can feel it.” I tried to assure him, but he didn’t seem convinced. “Just try to kick me or something.”

He shook his head and swung his open palm out and aimed for my thigh. When he was less than an inch away, his arm shot back.

“Did you do that?” I asked.

“No,” he said with disbelief. “Is it still up?”

“Yeah.” I could feel the shield nudging against my skin, wanted to get out, but I forced it to stay.

He reached behind him for something I couldn’t see then twisted, throwing a remote at my face. I forced myself not to flinch before it stopped and fell into my lap without touching me.

“Wow.” The corner of his lips tugged up.

I’d done it. Without proper training from someone with the ability. Just trial and error. It probably took longer than it should have, but I did it. A surge of pride and empowerment welled up in my chest.

What if this wasn’t the end? What if there was even more to my ability? What if the only limit was our knowledge? What else could I do?

“Gavin?”

He raised a brow in response.

“Can you do anything else?”

“Besides being invisible?” he asked, confused.

“Yeah, can you move through objects?” I raised the remote. “What if I could throw this through you.”

“I don’t think that’s how it works.”

“Why not?” I pressed.

He shrugged. “Because there’s only been a few people with invisibility, and that was all they could do.”

“What if they never tried?”

He stared off for a moment before nodding. A second later, he vanished.

“Let yourself believe it can happen.” I held up the remote and tossed it in the direction where he last sat. It bounced against him and fell to the ground.

My shoulders slumped, and he reappeared. “We can keep trying.”

“I just thought that since I could use my shield in two different ways, maybe there was more, and not just to mine but all of us. What if we thought there was only one way to use each ability because that’s what we’d been told? We didn’t even think to try other things.”

“That’s a good point.” He pursed his lips for a moment. “A really good theory. Let’s keep trying.”
