“My dad’s mother gave that to Mom last year for her birthday. She hates it,” Luca said like such an expensive gift was nothing.

“So? You shouldn’t throw it off the roof!”

He held it closer for me to examine, and I noticed the chickens edged into three rows around the base and cringed.

“Yeah. Trust me. She’ll thank us.” Luca nodded to Gavin who held it up for the camera before extending his arms over the edge and letting go.

We all leaned forward to watch the explosion. It was glorious but wasteful.

The manic laughter that exploded from the boys was well worth whatever trouble they’d get into later.

“Again!” Gavin screamed like a mad scientist.

Luca handed over the VCR, and we resumed our positions to watch the plastic fly everywhere upon contact.

I laughed with them, and within minutes Gavin let each of us have turns dropping. The sound of their cheers and excitement with the constant laughter filled my chest in a way I hadn’t felt in a long time. It was a simple joy. I was happy and relaxed because they were.

When the crates were empty, Gavin sat and leaned back on his hands. Luca joined him with his legs hanging over the edge, and I moved to space between them.

“So you invited me over to take part in this?” I asked. “Sky would have appreciated this more.”

Luca shrugged, “We had a few hours to burn before we could go, so Gavin suggested we do his homework.”

I glanced between them. “A few hours before what?”

Gavin grinned, “A council meeting.”

I still wasn’t sure what this meant. “Are we going to it?”

I’d wanted to since I learned about the Society and how it was broken into regions. A council meeting would introduce me to most of them, members, in our area at once.

“No, we’re going to break into the headquarters while it’s happening,” Luca mentioned casually as if he suggested we go get a pizza.

“What?” I twisted to face him. “Are you serious?”

“It’s the best time to do it. Everyone that works there will either be gone for the weekend or at the council meeting that is taking place thirty miles away. All we’ll have to worry about is a few security guards.”

This was what I asked for, but I thought there would be time and preparation before it happened.

“It’s the best time to go. Headquarters almost always have teams working around the clock. Council meetings are the expectation. Too many people are required to attend so work sort of halts,” Gavin explained.

I nodded and let out a breath. So not only had Luca brought Gavin in on this but planned it without giving me any warning.

I shot him a look, and he just smiled. “My listening will be helpful, but Gavin can get into places we can’t. He can sneak into the security room and disable the cameras if needed.”

This was turning into some sort of spy movie.

“I thought it was a matter of looking at a folder on someone’s desk or something. This sounds way more involved.”

They shared a look, “We can’t underestimate the Society.”

“We are the Society,” I pointed out.

Gavin nodded. “Which is why we probably won’t get into too much trouble if we get caught.”

I shook my head. “I pictured Luca and I saying we were going to visit his dad or something and swipe some paperwork off a desk and read it in the restroom before returning it.”

This was actually the most solid plan I came up with after days of obsessing over it. Breaking in after-hours was not something I even considered.
