Page 52 of Fear is the Key

“That’s not really how things work,” Gavin replied. “Everything’s digital and stored within the Society’s network. There’s no paper trail.”

I probably should have thought of that. They hadn’t remained secret for hundreds of years by leaving confidential information on a desk.

“You asked for my help. This is the best we came up with.” Luca’s nonchalance was both comforting and annoying.

“You think we can do it?” I needed to hear them confirm it one more time.

“Yes,” Gavin said with way more confidence than I felt.

I looked down at my comfy outfit and sighed. “This isn’t my best spyware.”

“Don’t worry about that.” Luca grinned.

They stood and carried the crates back down and headed into Luca’s room.

“We’re not going in wearing all black with ski masks. That would draw too much attention.” Luca was looking at a pile on his bed then turned. “We’re going in Society style.”

He held up a tux and a black gown I remembered seeing in his mom’s closet.

“So we’re going to pretend there's some gala at headquarters we’re attending?” I narrowed my eyes.

“No, we’re going to pretend we were on our way to attend an event but forgot something and needed to pick it up.” Luca clarified.

I shook my head. “I don’t know.”

“There are four charity events and parties happening tonight downtown. It wouldn’t be much of a stretch to believe you two are on your way to one, for the Society or not,” Gavin added.

“What about you? Where’s your tux?”

“I’m going to be invisible,” he answered.

“The whole time?” Was that even possible?”

“That’s the plan,” he nodded.

“Have you done that before? What if you show up?” This wasn’t going to work. I could feel it.

“I’ve been training a lot. I’ve lasted five hours, and I only stopped because I was bored.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I whispered. We’d been training together almost the entire time, but he never mentioned how much he’d improved.

He ducked his head. “We were focusing on other things.”

Like getting past his mental barrier and making out. I blushed at the memory.

“So get dressed, and we’ll head out.” Luca handed me the dress, and I went to his attached bathroom.

Luckily, the dress was backless and had a built-in bra because the pink sports bra I was wearing wasn’t selected with a gown in mind. I sighed and shook my head. Guys. They didn’t understand how much preparation went into looking black-tie worthy. My hair was in loose curls from the day before, and I only had mascara and blush on.

I’d have to borrow from his mom, again. It was a good thing I knew she didn’t mind. She’d been so gracious the last time offering me jewels and shoes and anything I could have possibly wanted.

I slid the dress up over my hips and pushed my arms through the thin straps before pulling it up to cover my chest. It was a bit tighter than I expected, but I could still breathe. I couldn’t reach the zipper, so I stepped back into the bedroom where Gavin was lying on the bed and Luca was tucking his pressed white shirt into his tailored pants. I allowed myself a few seconds to check out his butt before speaking.

“Can I get some help?” I turned as Gavin sat up.

“Wow,” he whispered as his hands went to the bottom of the zipper, a fraction of an inch above the lace of my underwear. “You look beautiful.”

Even though it was only a few inches long, having the zipper up made the dress feel much more secure. I twisted and spun making sure everything stayed in place.
