When I stopped, my eyes met Luca’s. He watched me with a hunger that froze me. His jaw tightened, and he took a step forward before blinking and dropping his head to focus on his cufflinks.

I cleared my throat. “Thanks.”

Gavin squeezed my hip. “What else do you need?”

“I’ll have to borrow some shoes and makeup.” I didn’t need to go all out since the goal was to not run into anyone, but just in case we did, I wanted to look the part.

“You’ll find everything you need downstairs.” Luca nodded. “We’ll meet you down there in just a minute.”

I wanted to wait for them, but something in his tone gave the impression that he needed to be alone with Gavin for something. I admired the way the skirt flared out as I floated down the stairs. It touched my ankles but had enough volume to keep from being too confining. It was a great choice for the night we had planned. I’d be able to run, and even fight back if needed.

I felt like I was already trespassing as I stepped into Luca’s parents’ suite and headed to the enormous bathroom that connected to Renae’s closet. I eyed the dozen or so rows of shoes, looking for a pair that would go with the dress while also not being too difficult to walk in. I spotted a pair of gold sandals with a low heel and tried them on.

If this were a real event, I wouldn’t have picked them, but they were comfortable and sturdy enough for my purposes tonight. By the time I found enough pins to hold my hair in a low knot, the guys joined me.

“Almost ready?” Luca asked while staring at his phone.

“Yeah.” My fingers trailed over the collection of designer makeup wondering what each black circle contained. I only needed a little something to look a bit more polished, and I settled on a rosy pink lipstick and a dusting of gold eye shadow. Simple, but just enough to be convincing.

I stood, and Gavin took my hand. “You look stunning.” He gently kissed my cheek, and I grinned up at him.

“Thank you.

Luca slid his phone into his pocket and looked between us. “Let’s go.”

Gavin walked out first, and Luca stopped me with his hand on my arm. “You are absolutely gorgeous.” He kissed my other cheek, and I had to look at the ground to hide the blush I could feel warming my face.

“Come on.” He took my hand in his, and we joined Gavin on the way out to Luca’s car.
