“No, please. Damn it.” He punched the bed. “I’m terrified of what I might do.”

“What?” I was beyond confused.

He held up his trembling hand, and I took it in mine. “I’m losing control.”

“Of your strength?”

He nodded and tried to pull away, but I held on. “I don’t want to hurt you. I would never forgive myself if I did.”

“You won’t.” I tried to argue, but he wasn’t listening.

“I already did! On the cruise. You woke me up, and I pinned you down. It wasn’t something I chose to do. It was an instinct. That’s how I was starting to feel just now. Like I was on the verge of slipping into mindless attack mode.”

“You didn’t last time we––”

“That was different.” He sighed. “I was so nervous then. I was focusing on the fact I tasted you. Touching you. There wasn’t room for me to think about anything else.”

“So what was different this time?” I flipped his hand over in mine while I traced each line on his palm. I wanted to calm him down and get his mind on something else.

“I could feel your desire. I could feel more of you,” he whispered the last word, like he was ashamed.

“We were getting a little hot and heavy,” I admitted with a grin.

He caught me and chuckled. “Yeah, well, my power felt that, and I have no idea what would have happened next. Maybe nothing, maybe me crushing you, literally.”

“Then, we’ll take things slower.” I paused what I was doing and stared back at him. “That’s completely fine. We’ll go at your pace and take breaks if we need to.”

He deflated. “I don’t want you to have to do that. You shouldn’t have to get up and grab a drink while we’re hooking up to give me time to regain control.”

I put my hand on his cheek. “Vince, I will do that and anything else that needs to happen to make sure you’re happy and comfortable.” I licked my lips. “I love you.”

His eyes widened. “You do?”

I nodded.

“No one but my mom’s ever said that to me.” His voice was so quiet I wasn’t sure if he meant to say it aloud. Then, he jerked his head and smiled that wonderful, goofy smile I was obsessed with. “I love you too.”

I kissed him quickly. “Then please don’t ever hesitate to tell me you need a break or a chance to calm down. There’s no rush. I just want to be with you, whatever that entails.”

The light in his face was back. “Thank you.”
