I slipped my finger under the seal and pulled out my copy. “It’s really happening.”

The cover showed the school’s emblem, and I turned the page expecting everything to be written in Latin or an image of a werewolf. Instead, there was a picture of two smiling teenagers, a boy and a girl, holding books and walking down a path between beautiful gothic buildings. The same generic image any school in America would use.

“Wow, their class catalog is . . . interesting.” Gavin was the first to speak. I flipped through the table of contents and a message from the headmaster to the page he was looking at.

“Math, science, foreign languages, literature, sports. It seems normal to me.” Noah said.

“Go to the next page,” he said, and we all did at the same time.

“Whoa.” Sky choked out.

The general subjects were broken down into the specific courses offered. They started out fairly normal: agriculture, herbology, intro to chemistry, Latin, potions, portals, divination.

“Um, are we going to be able to take any of these?” Vince asked. “It’s not like we have magic.”

Gavin shrugged. “It says here that they offer all the classes needed to graduate and attend a traditional university.”

I read that statement and continued. “This is a six-year school.”

“What?” Noah and Vince shouted at the same time.

“The youngest students are sixteen and most graduate at twenty-one.” I pointed to where I was reading from.

“That’s because most of the students stay there for higher education rather than leaving to go to a normal four-year university.” Gavin was already on the next page. “Those of us who don’t want to stay there will graduate at eighteen.”

“Weird.” Luca flipped through the next several pages. “Wow. The dorms look nice at least.”

“Our room assignments are included on this.” Sky held up a single sheet of paper. “It’s in the envelope.”

They all reached for theirs while I watched.

“Braxton Hall, room one-oh-seven.” Noah leaned over to read Vince’s. “Hey! We’re roomies!”

“Nice.” Vince held out his fist and Noah bumped it.

“I’m in one-oh-nine,” Sky sighed.

“Me too,” Gavin sat up.

“Great, so am I with some stranger?” Luca groaned and scanned his sheet. “Wait, I’m in one-oh-nine too.”

Gavin and Sky grinned.

“It looks like we have a corner suite, so there are three people.” Gavin pointed to the small map and floor layout on the back of the paper.

“What about you, Ave?” Noah asked.

Part of me didn’t want to know. I’d be away from them, so what did it matter? They were all waiting, so I pulled out my assignment and read, “Thatcher Hall, room one-ten.”

“That’s a corner suite too. You’ll have two roommates.” Gavin said.

“Great,” I said, imagining two girls I didn’t know and had to live with.

“CeeCee is in that room too!” Vince held up his phone, then glanced at the screen. “You’re rooming with her and Gwyneth.”

“How’d you know?” Sky asked.

“I asked her while you guys were reading yours.” Vince shrugged.
