We flew into Grand Falls, then drove nearly two hours north toward the Canadian border. The school sent a bus to pick us up, something I wish we would have known. The second Avalon saw the large man climb down the steps, her face paled, and she moved to the back of the group hiding with CeeCee and Gwyn.

I couldn’t be sure without asking him, but I was fairly confident he was a troll with some sort of humanizing glamour over him to make him look somewhat normal. None of us felt comfortable talking in his presence, so the entire drive was silent.

I made a mental note of the last location of obvious civilization. At least sixty miles southwest of the school. Not only was Drexel Academy impossible to find online, but I doubted anyone without specific directions could find the campus.

The twenty-foot-tall iron wall was the first thing we saw. Our driver pulled up to the entrance, and within seconds, the gate opened.

My heart thudded in my chest. This was really happening. I put on a brave face since my mom first told me this was a likely option, but I was terrified. None of us had ever come in contact with any other supernatural species, and now, we were going to be living with them, eating with them, and going to classes? While acting like this was completely normal?

Mom told me I had to be the leader. Everyone else would be calm if I was.

That was a fine idea in Chicago. Right now? I was freaking the hell out.

“Welcome to Drexel Academy of Supernatural Studies,” our driver said in a totally inhuman voice.

“Thank you,” I croaked out and stood, waving everyone else to grab their bags and get off.

We gathered on the sidewalk in front of an ivy-covered gothic building with ‘Administration’ carved in the stone over the doors. A thin, aging woman with graying brown hair rushed toward us.

“Hello, new students!” She waved her black clipboard at us. “Welcome, welcome!”

Vince and I shared a look before stepping forward.

“I’m Ms. Stone. I’m over your registration and helping you all settle in. I will be available for any questions you have now or in the future as well. Just think of me as the school’s information desk.” She smiled broadly, but it didn’t have the effect I assumed she was going for. I wasn’t at ease or jumping at the chance to ask her for help. We were in unknown territory, and I wanted a chance to scope the place out, immediately.

“On behalf of the administration, I’d like to be the first to tell you how excited we are for you to be here. We believe this will bring great changes and help strengthen ties between the Sorcerer’s Society and our communities.”

It was so strange to hear a stranger talk about our group so casually. This would be the first place outside our homes where we wouldn’t have to hide who we were.

“Let’s show you to the dorms so you can put your things away, and then I’ll give you the tour.” She turned on her heels and began walking without checking to see if we were following.

“We’ve got this,” I heard Luca whisper and glanced over my shoulder to see him kiss Ave’s cheek. I gave her a reassuring smile and nearly froze in place when she licked her lips and smiled back.

Yeah, together we’d survive this. We had to.
