I put my hands on his arm, and he didn’t push me away. “Because there will be a time when we don’t care about firsts. When we’ve been together long enough that there won’t be a way to keep track anymore. This part sucks. I know. But please trust me. Please trust us.”

He ran his free hand over his face.

“Maybe you can talk to some of the other bonded groups.” There wasn’t one as big as ours. Then I remembered Avalon. “You could talk to my friend Avalon and her guys. There are five of them, and they’re all happy. They’ve figured out how to manage a relationship.”

He shrugged. It wasn’t an outright refusal.

Maybe it would be good for both of our groups to get together and talk. They made it through this transitional stage. They could give us advice. One of them was bound to relate to what Sai was going through.

“Sai?” I wasn’t ready to leave. Not until I knew things between us were okay, and I was prepared to wait.

He didn’t move, didn’t respond.

He was thinking, so I let him. I shifted closer and rested my head on his shoulder. Eventually, he put his hand over mine and tugged me with him as he moved to lie down. I didn’t pull my hand away as I readjusted to lie next to him. It wasn’t easy, nor did I expect it looked graceful, but I didn’t want to break contact. It felt important. I wanted him to know I wasn’t willing to leave him, not even for a second.

He lifted his arm and looked down at me. I didn’t know what to do until he tapped his chest in invitation. I lowered my head to the spot between his chest and his arm, the perfect spot to cuddle into him, and draped my leg over his. His arm rested along my back, and his fingers found the slip of skin between my jeans and sweater.

In seconds, we went from a chilly distance to wrapped up in one another, just like I wanted.

I tilted my head up, and after a second, he looked down. I wasn’t sure if he would think I was forcing the moment, but it felt so right being here like this. With him. I licked my lips, and his eyes followed the movement.

I pressed on his chest to move up a few inches, and he met me. Our lips collided, and a spark went through my body. I gasped and pulled away to see him smiling.

He didn’t speak as I searched his eyes. I hadn’t felt that energy since I first met each of them.

I wasn’t sure what it meant, but it didn’t matter. Right now, all I wanted was Sai, so I didn’t wait another moment before kissing him again.
