I needed to tell her what happened, too, but she would be giddy and want details, and I wanted to be happy when I told her about the biggest day of my life. But it didn’t feel different, let alone special. Maybe I needed time to absorb and let it all sink in.

Masie was the only call I knew I could make. I saw her a few hours ago, but now I had questions I should have brought up long before now.

I found my phone on my new nightstand and waited for her to answer.

“Hi, sweetie,” she greeted. “Did you make it back to school okay?”

“Yeah, we got our new apartment too.”

“Wonderful. I’m so glad it was all able to come together on such short notice. Have you spoken to your parents yet?”

“No, I’m still kind of processing.” And I was a chicken.

“I understand. It was a big day.”

“Yeah.” How was I supposed to bring this up?

“Is everything okay?” She sounded worried.

“No, yeah. I’m fine. I just had a question about something, and I’m not sure how to ask.”

“I think we’re past anything awkward, sweetie.” She paused. “Is this about sex? Are the guys––”

“No!” I practically screamed. “No, none of that is going on. Not for a while.”

“I’m not going to judge, Saige. You are all bonded now. That comes with a pull to be together, in several ways, but you go at your speed.”

I dropped my head into my pillow. This wasn’t the conversation I wanted to have, but at least I felt more comfortable bringing up what I really wanted to talk about. Nothing was worse than this.

“I was wondering if my parents left anything behind? I know they were young and probably didn’t have much money or life insurance.”

“Oh.” There was a long pause before she burst out laughing. “Money is a hard subject, but I just assumed you were talking about being intimate. Oh, man. I’m so sorry.”

I waited for her to recover, and she finally stopped giggling.

“Your mom had a trust fund but wouldn’t have access to it until she was twenty-five.”

And she died at twenty-three. So, so young.

“So your grandparents have kept it for you with the same condition.”

I couldn’t have access for another seven and a half years. That wasn’t helpful.

“They didn’t have life insurance. That’s a human thing, unfortunately. But your father’s family did leave something behind for you.” She didn’t sound excited to tell me.

“What?”

“Land in their pack’s territory.”

Great. Something else I would never have access to. I doubted they wanted a non-shifting hybrid and her four pairs of hybrid mutts anywhere near their pack.

“Well then.”

“I’ve tried to reach out to them. I wanted them to know you were aware of our world now, but I hadn’t heard back.”

Because they didn’t want me. I knew that in my bones.

“That’s okay.”
