“Sorry, but when your thoughts are louder than the explosions, it’s hard to ignore.” He pointed to the TV, where a car chase with multiple crashes and gunfire was taking place.

“How do I block you guys?”

“You need to actively think of putting up a mental shield,” Sai replied, tapping on my foot. “It takes practice at first, but eventually it will be second nature. Then you will have to actively think of letting them in.”

“How do I start?” I asked, thinking about blocking my thoughts as much as I could.

“Stop yelling!” Theo and Niall shouted.

I flung myself back on the pillow. “I don’t know what to do.”

“Maybe it’s because we’re bonded, but it’s like your voice is in my head right now.” Theo got up and walked over to kneel in front of me.

I started to sit up, but Niall put his hand on my shoulder and kept it there. “Just relax.”

With the heat of his skin practically touching mine? Yeah, okay.

He smirked, and I groaned. Shit.

“Try to clear your head,” Theo started. “Push away the rest of your thoughts, and only think about the movie.”

I looked past him to the stupid action movie that didn’t seem to have an actual plot besides shooting at bad guys and driving expensive cars into bodies of water.

“Keep doing that. Only think about the movie,” he continued.

Oh good. Another expensive car. Wait. He’s not getting in. Just using it to hide behind. How is that woman supposed to keep up running with him in four-inch stilettos? She should take them off if her life is really at stake. Stepping on a rock or piece of glass is nothing compared to a gunshot wound.

“Good.” His voice pulled me back to the moment.

“Did you hear all that?” I asked.

“It went down to a gentle mumble. I couldn’t really pick out works.” He glanced at Niall, “You?”

“Same.”

“So, what was I doing differently from normal thinking?”

“That’s what you have to practice. Keep a mental stream of consciousness of what you see while you’re around us. It’s not the best shield, but it will work for now. It becomes dull background noise for us. We’ll work on a proper one starting tomorrow.”

I gave up, and he went back to his spot. Sai continued rubbing my feet, and soon I closed my eyes, soothed into a dreamless sleep.

“Where have you been? What happened? The wedd–” Hannah’s hug nearly brought us both to the ground, but luckily, Kaden was behind me and caught us.

“Take it down a few notches, Hannah. You haven’t seen her for a day, not a year.” He glanced around the dining hall before giving us a stern look and continuing to the line.

“Right, sorry. I just didn’t hear from you,” she whispered as we picked up trays and continued down the breakfast buffet.

“Because it happened.”

Her eyes widened. “What it?”

“The ceremony.”

She gasped but quickly recovered and reached for a plate of pancakes for both of us before turning and heading to our normal table. Daniel and Malik were already there with Theo and Sai, and it looked like they were catching the guys up.

“Why didn’t you tell me? I wanted to be there,” Hannah said with teary eyes.

“I wanted you there, too, but Mrs. Hedgings turned it into this secret thing and said I couldn’t bring you, but our parents were there. Well, theirs. My aunt came.”
