I nodded and stared down at our beautiful girl. She’s already been through more than anyone should. Overcome so much. She trusted us. She put herself in our hands, and look at what happened.

She didn't deserve this. She should be laughing and smiling and enjoying the experience of her magic growing and evolving. She should be falling in love with us.

“We need to talk to Mrs. Hedgings,” Niall said.

“How do we know it wasn’t her?” Kaden asked.

“She’s the only person at the school Saige trusts. We don’t have proof she’s innocent, but if Saige was able, she would ask for her,” Niall said, already pulling out his phone. “I’m sending her a message to come as soon as she can.”

“What about Ms. Chronis?” Theo asked.

“Let’s wait. I want to know what Mrs. Hedgings says first,” I suggested.

“You don’t think it was her? A professor?” Kaden gazed down at Saige.

“If it wasn’t her, it was one of our parents. Which one would you rather?”

He cringed and pulled the chair from under the window to the bedside and sat, never taking his eyes off her.

“What if someone else was there?” Niall asked. “What if someone found out about the ceremony and took the opportunity to target her?”

“Who? It was planned in just a few hours. How could word have spread?” Kaden asked.

I shook my head. “A well-meaning family member could have let something slip to the wrong person.”

“The kind of person who agrees with the council that hybrids shouldn’t exist. That interspecies mating should be outlawed.” Niall nodded slowly.

“We need to know exactly who each of our parents spoke to, and who those people told.” Kaden rubbed his jaw.

The conversation ended as we each got lost in our own thoughts. I couldn’t imagine any of our families purposely hurting us or Saige. But that meant that one of them associates with people who are against us. Direct threats. Someone who is willing to attack and hurt us.

A knock sounded, and I rushed over to unlock and open the door.

Mrs. Hedgings looked at me, confused, before taking in the scene behind me. “Oh dear.” She went to Saige, scooting Niall and Theo out of the way.

“What happened?”

I repeated the details of the morning through our most recent theory.

“I can’t believe it.” She covered her mouth with one hand and trailed her fingers over Saige’s forehead and cheeks. “Sweet girl.”

“How do we figure out who did this or what charm they used?” Kaden asked her.

She blinked a few times, and I realized she was fighting back tears. She cleared her throat once. “This isn’t something to be solved by students. We need to report this.”

“To who? The school? The council?” Niall challenged. “I thought you told us we need to stay under the radar. Not draw attention.”

She gave him a stern look. “Things have changed, Mr. Kelly. A student has been attacked. A full investigation needs to take place. People trained in handling these situations need to be brought in. If we can’t find who did this, then we need specialists to work on figuring out what curse was used. This is beyond our health clinic’s resources. We need experts.”

“Her aunt should have a say.” I hated arguing with a professor, but just because she was Saige’s favorite didn’t mean she was always right.

She closed her eyes and nodded. “And her parents should be notified.”

“Where’s Saige’s phone?” Kaden asked.

Dammit. I left our backpacks in the waiting area when they took us back to the exam room.

“Probably in her bag,” Niall replied and walked past me. I turned to see both of them leaning against the wall. At least someone around here was paying attention.
