I wanted to smack myself.

Of course, that was exactly what I was picturing in my mind. The only references I had were movies, and they made the transition look horrific. But this wasn’t the non-supe world. We had magic.

Duh.

It was basically an internal spell. Why didn’t I see that before? It wasn’t like shifting ever hurt any of them, and it happened in a flash.

“I feel like an idiot.”

He grinned. “No, you were thinking like a human.”

“Why were you embarrassed to tell me that?”

“Well, I did have a panic attack even though I’d been counting down the days for it to happen, but mostly, I wanted to make you laugh. I thought if I built it up to be something horrible, the truth would seem like nothing.”

I swatted at his arm. “That was mean.”

“But it worked, didn’t it?”

I nodded. “Yeah, it doesn’t seem like that big of a deal now.”

“Because it’s not. It’s completely natural and as easy as blinking or breathing. When the time comes, remember to relax and stay calm. Your wolf knows what she’s doing. Trust her.”

I could do that. Having already seen and been her in my dreams probably made that easier. I knew her. I trusted her instincts.

“The worst part is getting used to her senses,” he admitted. “That can be overwhelming, and it’s the only thing I can’t really help you with. I can imagine our senses are similar, but I’m not a wolf. I can’t say for sure.”

“And I can’t really ask anyone.” I understood their rushed words from earlier.

“Yeah.” He got up and patted my leg before heading into his bedroom.

A moment later, Niall walked back into the room, rubbing his forehead. “Hey! You’re back to normal.”

I nodded and sat up. “Yeah, thanks for getting me out of class. I didn’t know what was going on.”

“I can’t even imagine how bizarre it would be to have your senses taken over like that. It would be way too much to take in all at once,” he said.

I nodded. That summed it up.

“Well, Mrs. Hedgings said it’s likely that you’ll fully shift in the next week or two. There’s a teacher you can talk to if you’d like.”

Did I? There was a risk if they realized why I was asking.

“I’ll think about it.”

He nodded and dropped into the spot next to me. I leaned into him, rested my head on his shoulder, then wrapped my hands around his arm.

It happened so naturally I didn’t even realize what I’d done until he rested his head on top of mine and sighed.

What the hell?

Were we cuddling?

It felt so good. He leaned his head back against the couch with his eyes closed and kicked his legs up on the coffee table, making me fall into him a bit more. I pulled my legs out from under me and draped them across his lap. His hand immediately wrapped around my calf, holding me in place.

After all the stress and uncertainty of this afternoon, this felt amazing. I felt safe and protected and loved.

There was only one thing that could make it better.
