Kaden cocked his head in the same direction. We shared a brief look and took off running. Rodney followed until we got closer. Then, he took off at an impossible speed. How did he do that? Was it a wolf thing? I needed to ask.

“Mr. Venali?” Rodney dug through a pile of snow that came to my shoulders. “Can you hear me?”

I shuffled forward, sweeping my hands back and down to push the snow out of the way. Kaden went to Rodney’s other side to do the same.

“I hear his heartbeat,” I told him.

“Harry?” a soft voice called. “Oh, my! What’s happened?”

Rodney slowed just long enough to glance up. “I think he’s been buried. We heard the snow fall.”

Fall? It was more like a crack I felt through my body. Then, hundreds of pounds of snow hit the ground.

Kaden’s wide eyes made me pause, and he reached out.I could use air to lift this away.

You can’t. They’ll know you’re a hybrid.

He stared at the mound of snow that wasn’t lessening. His breathing has slowed.

No! We’re sticking to our stories.

He shook his head, then went back to digging with even more vigor. I matched his effort. We couldn’t let the pack know about his abilities, not yet. They didn’t trust us, and finding out we kept something this big from them wouldn’t help.

Not that it would be better after they trusted us, but the point was, they couldn’t know. We were keeping it to ourselves.

For as long as possible.

“I found his leg!” Rodney moved so we could get closer, and together we got the old man out. “Help me.”

I lifted him in my arms while Rodney ran ahead to the woman, Mrs. Venali. “We need to get him warmed up.”

Kaden followed me, and we went into the small home where a fire was already burning. I put the man down and stepped back to allow his wife to pull off his wet jacket. Rodney started on his shoes and socks.

“Let’s find blankets and towels.” Kaden turned and started for the hall while I looked for the bathroom.

I came back to the front room with a stack of towels, and he had two folded blankets.

“Oh, thank you.” Mrs. Venali took a towel and wiped her husband’s face and thin hair. I tossed another one to Rodney, and he dried off the man’s feet.

“We should take off his pants. They’re wet too,” he suggested and worked with the man’s wife to get them off.

Kaden offered a blanket, and they wrapped it around the man.Mr. Venali’s heart rate and breathing steadied. He would be fine once he warmed up.

Rodney sat back on his heels. “What was he doing out there? Sai and I were on the way over to clear out all that snow.”

Mrs. Venali blushed. “I told him that, but you know how stubborn he is. Said there were people who actually needed your help, and he could do it.”

Rodney rolled his eyes. “He couldn’t wait five more minutes.”

He didn’t seem too concerned now. Mrs. Venali wasn’t fussing, so they must not be worried either. Now that the crisis was over, I realized we were standing in a stranger’s home, and Kaden and I had gone through her things without asking.

I set the towels down and took the other blanket from Kaden, adding it to the pile. “I’m sorry we barged in.”

She turned and smiled, her eyes lifting. “My, I’m sorry for not introducing myself properly.”

“This wasn’t how any of us planned on meeting,” Rodney stood. “This is Sai and Kaden. They’re new to the pack.”

That was it? That was the only explanation he was going to give? I’d been wondering how the Alpha was going to introduce us. Mrs. Venali didn’t ask anything else, so it must not be an issue.
