“I wasn't sure if it was my Earth magic coming through, but unfortunately, the iron cuffs are doing their jobs too well.”

Second felt like minutes, and each minute felt like we were crouched on the ground for an hour. In some ways, this was worse than not knowing about our friends’ and families’ safety. I could pretend they were all fine. But we were under direct attack, and I had no idea if my grandfather, uncles, Nancy, Gloria, Serene, Emily, Joey, Dustin, or even Jeff were okay.

I hadn't realized I had so many people here I cared about until this moment. I hated that I couldn't do anything to help them. I was stuck here, as vulnerable and weak as anyone could be. The pack was strong and well-guarded and well trained, but I didn’t know how many attackers the Mississippi pack might have. They could have thousands of wolves moving in on the compound, or it could be a half dozen assassins here specifically for us. Judging by the noise, they weren't very stealthy, so my guess was on an outright attack.

The guard suddenly drew his gun and stepped into the shadow of the window.

“Someone's here,” I whispered.

Kaden tilted his head and nodded once. “Footsteps, a few of them. At least three people.”

The guard lowered his gun and went to the door, but it didn't open.

“Lower your spells,” he barked at Niall.

“Are you sure it's safe?” Niall shot back.

“It's the Alpha and two of his sons.”

Niall relaxed, and the guard was able to open the door, swinging it open to let the Alpha, Rainer, and Tom inside.

“You guys are safe?” the Alpha asked, and we nodded.

Sai held up his wrist. “Can you please take these off now?”

Horror crossed the Alpha’s face. “Those weren't removed before? How are you supposed to defend yourselves?”

Sai looked at the guard. “He refused to remove them. Said he didn't have the means or authorization.”

Rainer ran forward, pulling a keychain out of his back pocket and hitting our cuffs with what looked like a magnet. They fell to the floor, and I felt my power surge forward as if it had built up waiting below the surface. I took a gasping breath to push it down.

Niall rubbed my back as if sensing what was happening and managed to calm me.

“Thank you,” I told him quietly before we all looked at the Alpha. “What's going on? Do we need to go?”

“Are we escaping?” Kaden asked.

“No, it's safe,” the Alpha argued. “We have everything under control. We were able to neutralize the enemy and run a thorough check of our land.”

“They were here for me, weren’t they?” I asked.

I was grateful my grandfather didn't bother to lie.

The sound of voices grew coming from the direction of the main street. The glow of flashlights and lanterns flickered through the windows, growing more intense as they headed toward us.

“What's that?” I pointed past the Alpha and my uncles.

They turned, and Tom cursed.

“Stay inside,” the Alpha ordered before going out to meet the crowd. Tom followed him, but Rainer stayed back with us.

“What's going on?” I tried to look over his shoulder, but he shut the door, blocking our view.

“Let them deal with it.” He tried to usher us further back, but I stood my ground while listening to the angry voices.

“Oh, shit.” Kaden put his arm around me, but I stepped out of his reach.

I sorted through the noise and picked out a few of the words. Granddaughter. Hybrid. Mutation. Council. Danger.
