“You can’t shift,” Sai whispered in panic. “You can’t protect yourself, either.”

Not in any way that would harm the wolves. I doubted any of the potions I had stored here were of use in an attack. Not unless the dish cleaner or thickening conditioner would be slippery enough to make them lose their footing. While it might make for a funny scene at any other time, it wasn’t a solution for this escalating issue.

“Can you push your power to us?” Niall asked.

I focused on the gathering the energy inside me, but it was like reaching into an empty well. “No. I can’t feel it.”

“Shit,” Kaden cursed.

“Fuck,” Theo agreed.

“The three of us will have to try. I can put a protection spell around us, then use the water in the snow to create another layer of defense,” Niall offered.

The three of them scooted together until they faced one another.

I moved closer to Sai to give them room.

“This is ridiculous. They can’t leave us vulnerable like this.” Sai raked his fingers through his long hair.

Niall shook his head with his eyes closed. “I did the basic protection spell, but I don't have enough power to create a shield around the entire house. I'll just have to do the entrances.”

“That's fine,” Kaden assured him without taking his eyes off the guard, who was now frozen in front of one of the windows.

“They're getting closer,” the guard announced, and I could hear the fight moving towards us.

“We can't stay in here and do nothing,” Sai yelled at him.

“We don't have another choice.” I took his hand in mine and our iron cuffs clinked together. “We're not in a position to fight.”

“Maybe not you two, but the rest of us can,” Theo stood.

“Get back down!” the guard barked.

Theo rolled his eyes but dropped back down to his knees. “I can use fire.”

“You're not going to start a fire in the forest,” the guard gave up the appearance of not listening to us. “That would just make things worse.”

“I wasn't going to light the trees on fire,” Theo argued with little patience. “I can throw fireballs at the wolves running toward me.”

“I can at least shift and go see what's happening,” Kaden said as he moved to a crouch.

“No one is leaving this building,” the guards bit out each word.

“We can't stay here and wait for them to attack. We have to do something to stop them from getting close enough to Saige or Sai,” Kaden shot back.

“You have no faith in your pack?” the guard asked me directly, as if I should take the guy's complaints as a personal offensive.

“I don't want anyone to get hurt because of us being here. We're more than capable of protecting ourselves under normal circumstances.” I held up my wrist. “But since these are on, I trust them to know what they're ready for. If they're confident, they can do something to help, I want them to. Kaden can shift into his hawk form and stay out of sight. He could let us know what's going on. He might even be able to deliver a message if needed.”

The guard seem to consider that for a second before he shook his head. “No, my orders are clear from the Alpha. We are to stay inside and stay safe until he arrives.”

“If he arrives,” Theo mumbled. “I should be out there helping. I can get myself safely to the health clinic. I should be there to help anyone that gets hurt.”

“All of you need to shut up!” the guard said. He was probably sick of us making sense, but it wasn't his fault. He was following orders.

A loud bang exploded outside, and I felt the earth shake. I gasped. “You guys felt that, right?”

They all nodded.
