He swallowed. “He's currently down. In the entryway. It looks like he opened the front door and was hit with a tranquilizer as well.”

“Oh, shit!” Sai blurted. “We're under attack.”

He just figured that out?

“We should be safe if we stay inside, away from the windows, and don't leave,” Niall assured him.

“Your spells might work for now, but who knows what those shifters have up their sleeves? I need to go back and sound the alarm for the Alpha and your uncles. I’ll try to get them to come here. Maybe they have patrol guards they trust enough to send as well.”

He took a step back, but I stopped him.

“What do you mean, people they trust?”

Niall stared at Kaden before turning to me. “None of the alarms were sounded because this is an inside attack.”

Kaden nodded.

“These are pack members?” I gasped.

“You don't know that for sure,” Sai interjected. “There could just be one or two patrolmen that let them through.”

He sent a look to Kaden, who finally agreed. “You're right. They might have been able to get through one section of the border undetected. I'll be back.”

Without another word, Kaden turned and Niall opened the window for him as he again took his hawk form and flew out. I tried to watch him as he disappeared into the darkness, but another sound from the other side of the house snapped my attention in that direction.

“What was that?” I couldn’t worry about what was coming yet. We had problems in here. “Sai, we need to get your cuffs off.”

“We don't have the key. The guards don't either,” Sai pointed out.

Niall ignored him, going over and holding his hands over the cuffs. A few seconds later, they snapped open and fell to the ground.

“When did you figure that out?” Sai demanded.

“I had a couple of ideas once we found out that the guards weren't able to get those off. I didn't want an emergency like this to happen again. So I wrote a spell. I wasn't sure if it was going to work, so I didn't want to tell you.”

Sai glared. “Well, we could have practiced.”

Niall just smirked and did the same to mine before turning back to Sai. “Let's go.”

“Where are you guys going?”

“We're going to go pull Theo inside and close the door. Make sure that everything's okay,” Niall explained.

I didn't want them to leave me, but I hated the idea of Theo being vulnerable. I wanted them to have backup. They shut the door behind them, and I closed my eyes, trying to feel the connections to my grandpa and uncles. It was too hard to concentrate. I couldn’t clear my mind. Kaden would reach them before I could.

Where were Niall and Sai? I started counting, hoping I didn't get to sixty or even thirty before they were back. At twenty-seven, an explosion sounded. The air shifted, and a sense of magic washed over me before disappearing. They'd gotten through Niall’s spells.

We had no protection unless I could do something. I stood up and threw my arms out, focusing on my intention on the earth around the house and opening a fissure deep enough and wide enough that no one could cross it.

I heard a few men scream, but I knew that wouldn't be enough to keep them away for long. Wolves might be able to jump over, so I shifted my attention to my Water magic. Pushing my hands out, I formed icicles from the sides of the house, pointing directly outward. If anyone dared make the jump, hopefully, they would hit the sharp points hard enough to do damage.

I focused on the protection spell. I’d done it enough times in our apartment back at school, but I never tried to do an entire building. The process couldn’t be that different. I just had to make sure my intention was on the building as a whole instead of just one part. I didn't want to risk damage to the outside that might hurt us, like fire.

More screaming. Sai’s tiger roared. I needed to hurry. I went through all the protection spells I could remember and the ones that Niall taught me, then realized that I needed to focus on myself and how I was going to protect myself if the need arose.

I used the invisibility spell I mastered while walking through the tunnels of the Academy and hoped it would be enough. I moved to the corner of the room, out of sight of the door and window and fought back the emotions rising in me to remain calm.

More snarling and banging came from around the house.
