Ivan nodded. Shelly looked sick.

“I have to go.” Luke kept his eyes on Quinn. She nodded.

“Of course,” Mrs. Harper said. “It was so kind of you to bring our Quinny home. You must come for dinner one night. Quinn will join you soon for the pumpkin rolling.”

“Mom.” Quinn sighed.

“I’ll walk out with you,” Chief Blake said to Luke.

He nodded his goodbyes, and the two men headed outside to where they had parked.

“You’re leaning toward someone wanting this place because of what it would bring, aren’t you, Chief?”

“I can’t think of another reason. You don’t nearly kill someone in a fire because you want some land to retire to, if that’s what happened. But I’ve known Ivan for years, and he’s not the accident-prone type.”

“Yeah.”

“You sweet on that girl, Luke?”

“What? No.”

“Shame. She’d be perfect for you.” Chief Blake clapped him on the shoulder. “See you in town.”

Luke got into his pickup and followed the head of the Ryker Falls Police Department out of the Harper drive.

What the hell had he been thinking, looking out for Quinn? She wasn’t like the others. He could kiss them and have a night between the sheets and walk away. She was different and had been from the start.

Every damn thing about Quinn Harper got to him.

Who was after the Harpers? The thought of anything happening to Quinn made the blood in his veins turn to ice.

Thoughts churning around inside his head, he parked on the road into town behind the other cars. The main street was closed off to all but emergency vehicles now due to more Halloween festivities.

Tables had been set up on the grassy area and covered in checkered cloths. The pumpkins that were competing against each other for the supreme award were all standing in rows. There were Halloween decorations everywhere, and a lot of people and noise. Normally he loved this shit.

“Where’d you go?” Fin was jamming a hotdog into his mouth as he joined Luke.

“I took Quinn home. She had a call from her mom and needed a ride.”

“She’s nice. You should move there.”

“Move?”

“Ask her out. She’s cool.”

“What?”

“Quinn. You and her, you’d be good. Plus she’s a fighter pilot. Can’t get a lot cooler than that.”

“Not happening.”

“If you say so.”

“I do.”

“Okay.”

“Shut up, Fin.”
