After they’d made love and he’d told her he wanted to be friends and she’d called him a coward.

“She looked sad.”

Fuck. That thought actually caused his chest to burn.

“Do you know why she looked sad, Luke?”

He did know. He’d made her sad.

“That look suggests maybe you do. How do you feel about Quinn Harper, bro?”

“And I’d tell you that why?”

“That’s all I needed,” Joe said.

“What?”

Jack pushed his face between them, as he was sitting behind with Nixon.

“If you had no feelings for her, you’d just say so. You didn’t, ergo, you do.”

“Ergo?”

“It was Rory’s word of the day; you both be sure to tell her I used it.”

“I heard! Well done, babe. You totally got that in context,” Rory said.

Luke looked at Jack. “It’s like I don’t even know you anymore.”

“I’m improving myself.” Jack looked smug.

“He’s got you there,” Joe added. “He has the most improving to do out of the four of us.”

Luke looked at Nixon. He was laughing.

“Don’t you hurt that girl, Luke,” Joe said.

“I don’t want to.”

“You need to take a chance.”

He thought about that. “Maybe I do,” he added softly. “She called me a coward, Joe.”

His brother whistled.

“I think she’s got a point,” Luke added.

“Me too.”

Joe held out his hand, and Luke gripped it briefly.

“You got this, Luke.”

“Yeah, maybe I do,” he added softly.

Mayor Gripper appeared then on the stage Joe had set up. He wore a pumpkin-colored suit, black shirt with white pinstripes, and pumpkin tie.

“If I wore that, everyone would be laughing,” Pip said.
