“Yeah.” She looked out his window. “Not sure why someone would be driving around out there, but maybe Dad knows. I’ll ask him later.”

“I heard he’s going to the doctor.”

She nodded. “It needed to be done, if only to get Mom off his back.”

“You’re frowning again.”

“Worry does that.”

“I’m sure he’ll be all right, but if something else is going on, at least you’ll know now.”

Quinn nodded. She looked like she wanted to say something.

“You can tell me anything, Quinn. It won’t go any further, and if those idiots in the back hear, they’re pretty good at keeping their mouths shut too.”

“It’s probably nothing.”

“Probably, but as it’s bugging you, tell me.”

“This man knocked on the door yesterday, Luke. Mom and Dad were out.”

“What did he want?”

“He said he was just passing and called in to chat with Dad again. Apparently he offered to buy the farm a year ago, but Dad didn’t want to sell. He seemed nice enough. I told my parents, and they confirmed he had approached them before. They’d thought he’d come back at some stage, as he was very keen.”

“Why does him coming worry you, Quinn?”

She shrugged. “I don’t really know. I just got this feeling about him, and I’m not sure why.”

“What kind of feeling?”

“I felt uncomfortable until he’d left the property. He said he really wanted the land several times. Said it was perfect for his needs and he was willing to pay a good price. He was really insistent. He even said that he was sure Dad would retire soon.”

He thought about that for a minute.

“Luke, do you think it’s possible that those things happening were not accidents?”

“That’s out of left field.”

“I know, and why would someone want the Harper land so much that they would resort to causing ‘accidents’?”

“Exactly.” But he couldn’t lie; her words had started him thinking. “But you need to keep an eye out, Quinn, just in case.”

“I’m sure it’s nothing.”

“Me too. But now you’ve said it, it bears thinking about.”

They fell silent. Luke listened as Dylan and the others asked Quinn some questions about flying. Let his eyes study the mountains they flew over, and valleys and streams below.

Could it be possible that someone was deliberately messing with Ivan Harper?

“Has your brother always been weird?”

“What?” He shot Quinn a look.

“Joe. Has he always had this weird thing about brown M&M’s?”

“Pretty much. People think he’s normal and respect him because he’s on the town council and stuff, but it’s all a lie. I feel sorry for his wife, Bailey.”
