Chapter15

After they got back to the motel, Quinn went to her room and rang her parents to tell them she’d be home tomorrow. Thankfully it was her dad who answered, so she didn’t have to answer fifty questions from her mother. Then she showered, pulled on her long-sleeved T-shirt and panties, and sat on her bed and watched some mindless TV. She woke with a crick in her neck and the TV still going. Wide awake, Quinn decided to make a cup of hot chocolate.

Passing the window, she opened the curtains and peered out. Moonlight showed her the parking lot was quiet except for a single man. Quinn watched Luke walk back and forth, hands in pockets, head down, deep in thought.

In the space of a day, he’d learned he had a younger brother and that his mother was dead. Then there was the fight and meeting Nixon for the first time. It was enough to derail anyone. But added to that was his past that she knew must be playing on his mind.

She’d enjoyed sitting in that booth pressed to his side in that diner. Quinn wasn’t sure what it was about that man that made her feel things, but she did. She’d felt nothing when Joe’s body touched her, but Luke’s had set her on fire.

She watched him pace again. Then, tugging a blanket off the bed, Quinn opened the door and stepped outside. He looked her way.

“Are you okay, Luke?”

“Sure. Go back to sleep, Quinn.” He moved closer to speak so he didn’t have to raise his voice.

“Why are you out here in the cold and not in bed?”

“Clearly, I can’t sleep.” He sounded testy.

“I’m making hot chocolate if you want some.”

“You can’t sleep either?”

“No.”

“Got anything stronger?”

She shook her head, and he sighed.

“But I have candy.”

“Hot chocolate and candy, yum,” he said with zero enthusiasm.

Quinn backed into her room and headed to the bathroom to pull on her jeans and a sweater. She then made the hot chocolate while he sat in silence at the small table, taking up all the remaining space in the small room.

“Who is Lionel, and why did he make you tense up in the diner?”

Quinn lowered the mug onto the table and dropped a block of chocolate before him, then sat opposite.

“He didn’t make me tense.”

“I was sitting next to you. I felt it.” His green eyes locked on hers.

“He’s just someone from my past.”

“Were you in a relationship with him?”

“I don’t really want to talk about Lionel. How about you? Dating anyone?”

“No.”

“Shame, it would take you off my mom’s Prospective Husbands for Quinn list.”

He laughed softly. “Did you sleep with him?”

“What?”

“Lionel. He couldn’t keep his eyes off you. Did you sleep with him?”
