Chapter17

They left for the diner at eight. Quinn had lectured herself in the shower to keep it friendly. No need to make a big deal out of what happened, even though to her it felt like a big deal.

She’d never been a girl to sigh and giggle over men, but she got it now. Understood what it must be like to call up her bestie and say she’d just had the best sex of her life with a man who rocked her world, and what was she supposed to do now?

Her body felt different. Stiff in some places and sore in others and relaxed, and yet at the same time edgy. Which made no actual sense and told Quinn she needed to keep it together.

It had been sex and nothing more. He’d needed her, and she’d wanted him. End of story.

“Sleep well?” Joe Trainer fell in beside her as they walked. It was cold this morning, little puffs of air formed as he talked.

“I did, thanks.”

“I always find hotel beds a bit short.”

“I bet.”

“And I miss Bailey and the kids.”

“I don’t really remember her, but Mom told me she went on to be renowned pianist.” Quinn had received this information in a chatty email from her mom.

“She’s pretty special, my wife, and has been my soul mate since we were children.”

Quinn shot a look at Joe Trainer. He was smiling.

“It’s funny how you can have people come in and out of your life but only one is your destiny.”

“That’s very deep for such an early hour.” Quinn went for humor because his words disturbed her. She’d chosen to focus on her career and nothing more, but she was also sometimes aware of just how lonely that choice had made her.

“That human puzzle piece needed to complete you,” he went on.

Did he know that Quinn and Luke had slept together last night? The thought wormed its way into her head.

“I’m pleased you found your soul mate, Joe.”

“When you do, everything in your life changes, and suddenly your focus shifts, Quinn.”

“I bet.” Just a few more feet and they’d be at the diner.

“But the trick is to keep your eyes open for when that puzzle piece turns up.”

“There are a lot of people in this world, Joe. It’s just blind luck finding the right one, as is evidenced by the rates of divorce in the country.”

He looked down at her, his green eyes, Luke’s eyes, serious.

“Point taken, but you know when you know, so don’t fight it.”

“What’s wrong?” Luke held the door open for her when they reached the diner.

“Nothing.”

“You look dazed.”

“No. I’m fine.”

“I thought maybe you were still reeling from my skill between the sheets.”

The words had been whispered in her ear, low and dirty. Quinn made a sound in her throat, her eyes going to the others, who had entered before her.
