“You go on, Quinn. I’ll wait here with your mom.” Piper had a look in her eyes that would have had Quinn running for cover.

“It’s all good,” she whispered.

“Go.” She waved her hand. “And before you do, I don’t think I ever thanked you for your service to your country, Quinn.”

Quinn nodded, and her mother smiled.

“I’ll go with Quinn and see if she has a pink shirt to wear, Mommy. Her mom may like her better then.”

Out of the mouths of babes, Quinn thought as a little hand slipped into hers. They headed to her room.

“I don’t have a pink shirt, sorry, Grace.”

“That’s okay.”

The little girl began to inspect the room after they’d entered.

“I won’t be a minute, Grace.” Quinn threw off her cap, grabbed clothes, and headed into the bathroom. Stripping, she pulled on black yoga shorts and a tank top, then slipped on track pants and a sweatshirt. Pulling out the band in her hair, she dragged a brush through it and retied the ponytail.

“How’s this?” She held out her arms for Grace to inspect.

“No color,” the little girl said. She was lying on the bed resting on the pillows like the princess she was.

“I don’t have color.”

“Mummy will help you.”

“Let’s go, then.” Grabbing her phone she took a cookie for Grace out of the stash she kept in her drawer. She’d ask Piper if it was okay for her little girl to have it. She then led her back to where Piper waited.

“Do you know, Mrs. Harper, I’ve always found strong, powerful, and wonderful woman take a bit longer than the rest of us to find a partner. Men are easily intimidated, and let’s face it, your daughter is an Amazon. I can’t imagine how hard she fought to rise to the top in the field she is in. A fighter pilot.”

“Oh well,” her mom said.

“Your daughter is my new hero.”

Quinn stepped into the hallway holding Grace’s little fingers in hers.

“And there she is, looking strong and beautiful. Ready to go, Quinn?”

“Sure. Later, Mom.”

“She won’t be home for dinner,” Piper said, taking Quinn’s hand and pulling her out the door.

“I can take my car.”

“No need, I’ll drop you home later.”

“You okay, Piper?” Quinn said, climbing into the passenger seat of her SUV while Gracie was belted into her seat. The woman looked tense and angry after her conversation with Quinn’s mom.

“Peachy.”

“Okay if I give Grace this?” She held up the cookie.

“Sure.”

Looking in the back, she handed Grace the treat, as Piper climbed into the driver seat.

“Quinn?” Piper shot her a look.
