Chapter Seven

Afew weeks later.

––––––––

While sitting in theback corner of the classroom, I admire the professor who has been keeping his distance as he paces back and forth summarizing the semester. We’ll take a short winter recess, and then it will start back up again in April.During that time, we go over all the new regulations and research how to better reach students. We’ll also have meetings and communications with fellow teachers to collaborate on lesson plans.

“There are no words to express my gratitude for the privilege to have been your professor for this class.I know it may sound like bullshit, but it is sincere.I get to teach what I love alongside one of the best Teacher Assistants, Miss Johnson, and that makes me a very lucky man.”Xander says, “Can we have a round of applause for Miss Johnson and all her help this semester?”He begins clapping, and the embarrassment creeps into my face.I stand, bow and make my way to the front of the class.

“Thank you, Professor Manning. It has truly been an honor grading all your papers,” I put my hands out in front of me, acknowledging the students. Then I turn and continue, “And doing all your work for you this semester,” I say, a big smile on my face, and some of the students laugh.

“But honestly, each and every one of you has inspired me to continue on my journey. Each of you can be whatever you want to be.Make every day count, even the hard ones.Lessons learned are the most valuable. Now, get the heck out of here!”I clap for the students as they walk down, say their goodbyes, and exit the classroom.

Once the classroom is empty, I slide my laptop into my backpack.“Come into the office for a celebratory drink?”Xander asks.I nod and follow him through the door, down the hall and wait as he unlocks his office.

I close the door behind me and take a seat.He pulls a bottle with two glasses from his desk.

“I was thinking, instead of coming to the office, since we live right next to each other, can’t we just stay home and do all this meeting bullshit in our pajamas?”

He slides a glass across the desk.I reach over and grab it.

I’m trying to get back the friend I seem to have lost at Thanksgiving.Don’t get me wrong, we talk, but since that night, we have not flirted, and if I’m honest.I miss his kiss, just one more kiss.

XANDER

Spending time off campus in our pajamas? Is she nuts?

I can see the benefit of not having to get on the bus and drag my ass into the office daily, but I’m not sure about this.

“It may be doable, but you’ll have to wear clothes.I’ve seen your pajamas. They are not acceptable for work,” I state, remembering what she looks like in her sleepwear.

She sits back in the chair, “Still peeking through my windows, are you?”she says, holding out her glass.“May we live to learn well, and learn to live well,” she toasts.

I hold my glass up, but before clicking, I say, “Drink to life and the passing show and the eyes of the prettiest girl I know.”The glasses make contact. She blinks her eyes rapidly, tilting her head to the right and acting bashful. It’s the cutest thing, with her long brown hair cascading over her shoulders and her plump thick, succulent lips touching the brim of the glass.

Fuck, fuck, fuck!

I drink and sit forward on the chair, grabbing the bottle and offering another to Kendra.“No, thank you.I need to get home and then head over to the Wig Wam.I promised Diesel and Nicki I would help set up the holiday decorations.

“You should stop by if you’re not doing anything.I can always drive you home afterward.”she offers, and I may take her up on that offer.
