Chapter Twelve

––––––––

Agray Nissan pullsup.I knock on the window, “Are you my uber?”the girl smiles, “I think so.Are you going to Copley?”I nod, reach for the passenger door handle, climb in, and point forward, “Onward!”

It takes about seven minutes to get to Copley Avenue from the Wig Wam, but it felt like forever.I fight with the seatbelt to get out, stumble three steps, and, with help from the slick ice, down I go.

Laughing hysterically, I lay back in the snow, the cold feeling good on my overheated, frustrated body.

“Are you okay?”I hear from the driver.I can’t help but continue to laugh, opening my mouth and trying to catch the snowflakes.Sliding my arms back and forth, I begin to make a snow angel.

XANDER

She is drunk off her ass, literally.I watch as she slips and falls, and I come running from next door.

“I’ll take care of her,” I let the uber driver go.It was nice that she was waiting to make sure Kendra got inside, but this might take a while.

“Kendra?”I walk with caution, not afraid to slip but concerned about what her reaction may be toward me.I know when I left earlier, she was angry, but that is partially her fault since she didn’t let me explain. All I wanted to do was tell her how much I was in love with her.

“Xander?Xander, is that you?”She tries to get up but slips to the side, laughing. She can’t seem to get to her feet. She crosses her legs, “Why don’t you want me?”she mumbles.

“Kendra, you have it all wrong.”I reach out my hand. She tilts her head up.Her big brown eyes stare back at me, “Let me get you inside,” I say, wiggling my fingers out in front of her.

She reaches up as I pull and tug her into me.Instincts have my arms wrapping around her.She leans in, and we kiss, her hands rake down my back, and I pull away.Again.

“You’ve been out for hours,” I push the hair behind her ear, move my finger to her chin and gently push so she’ll look me in the eye.

Tears are building, and guilt fills my chest, “I don’t mean to hurt you.”I kiss the tip of her nose, then rest my lips on her forehead.God, how can I fix this?

“Fuck you, Xander.I’m done,” she says, stepping to the side and walking up the path.I turn and watch as she fumbles with her keys but gets inside.I know I’m not welcome with the slam of the door, so I retreat to my own home.

Once I lock my front door, I find myself leaning against the window frame, looking into her living room.
