And they had all come, mainly because their curiosity wouldn’t keep them away.

They wrote me off, and I came back. Now they wanted to know what I was going to do next.

“A new era is dawning,” I continued smoothly. “It’s time for the Mafia to step out of the shadows and continue our operations in plain sight. How long have we waited for the opportunity to do so?”

A few nods, but I kept talking, not giving a shit what they thought. “With the legalization of weed, we will be able to move goods unmolested through the state. With crowds chanting defund the police, there is more opportunity to dictate the future of security in the city.” I had already put things in motion to expand my security company, the very one that had put me in prison to begin with, to combat the supposed worries about less cops to protect the city.

“The wealthy will be looking for other means of protecting themselves,” I continued. “And we will be there to provide them with that personalized security.”

Well, I was going to be there. I had already used some of my influence and a few minions in the Cavazzo Mafia to secure some wealthy clients, putting together my fucking retirement plan nicely. It was helping to fund my plans, my future plans that they had yet to be privy to.

My eyes slid over to Adrian, who was seated at my right, a seat of honor that I knew he was nutting in his fucking pants over. He was going to be so pliable, and I couldn’t wait to put him to use.

But first, I needed to demonstrate something to him. Show him the kind of true power I wielded.

“A new era is dawning,” I repeated, holding up my glass. “Let us toast to the future of organized crime!”

At first the dons just stared at me, but then Adrian rose from his seat, holding his glass aloft, and they had no choice but to follow suit, toasting the Don they had written off, the one that they thought would be nothing more than a memory.

Once they were all standing, I smirked at them, knowing that they were waiting for my next move. They had turned their backs on me, ignored my pleas for their funds and their legal assistance. I forced myself to remember every laugh, every call that had gone unanswered and how no one had visited me in prison to see if they could lend their aid.

No, they had attempted to pilfer my trade routes and businesses, picking at the bones of what they thought were the carcass of the D’Agostino name.

Some had gone as far as lusting after my daughter, bidding for the right to defile her.

She was mine to control, not theirs. This was going to betheirlesson.

“While I appreciate you all being here tonight,” I drawled. “I have no more use for you.”

“What is the meaning of this?” one of them growled, clearly done with my petty speeches.

“You fucking piece of shit,” another seethed as he threw down his glass and started toward the only exit from the basement.

Yet another reason why I moved the party downstairs tonight. There was only one way out. And it wouldn’t be through any doors.

I took a long draw off my glass before setting it down and snapping my fingers, stepping back so that the fun could begin.

My men—my loyal men—stepped in. I laughed as the gunfire started to drown out the screams. No one other than myself and Adrian were safe from the bullets that sprayed the room.

I spared a quick look at Adrian, watching his face turn pale, and then different shades of green as he finally realized the cost of allying with me, and the consequence of betraying me.

Red rivulets swirled on the plastic sheets. For a moment, you could almost fool yourself into thinking it was just fine red wine. I breathed deeply as the air filled with the metallic scent of gunpowder and blood.

A new era was dawning indeed. And like childbirth, it required a rite of passage in blood and pain.

“Long live the king,” I murmured and drained my glass.

My men walked around to each body, and shot another bullet in their heads to make sure they were dead.

I was back, and no one would be able to escape my wrath.

Neither my traitor of a son.

Nor my whore of a daughter.
