Chapter 58

Leda

I woke with a start, my heart racing in my chest. For a moment I thought I was back on my father’s study floor, with blood starting to congeal under my body.

Whose blood, I wasn’t sure.

“Shh, you are okay. You are safe.”

Turning, I found Rory standing near the bed, giving me a tired smile. “Where am I?”

“You are in the hospital,” she replied, reaching out to smooth the hair off my forehead. “You are safe. It’s over.”

“Nico,” I breathed, clutching her hand. “Lucas.”

“They are both here,” she stated, tears glittering in her eyes. “You did it, Leda. You saved all of us. He’s dead. Your father is gone for good.”

There was little relief, however, as Rory wasn’t answering my questions. She had said they were both here, but were they alive?

“You have a broken wrist,” she carried on, nodding at the cast on my wrist. “And you were a bit dehydrated, but they said that you are okay. The baby is okay.”

The baby.

I looked at my stomach and pressed a hand to the bump, tears crowding my eyes. My baby was safe. A broken wrist could heal, but the threat of losing my child had been apparent when going up against my father. “Lucas?”

Rory blew out a breath. “He’s in the ICU. They took him to surgery as quickly as they could. Knife wounds are nasty, but he’s lucky nothing vital was pierced. We’re still waiting for any updates. Nico is coming to terms with the fact that he will have to look like a pirate for the rest of his life, but I’m going to be there to help him.”

Nico’s eye. I turned to my sister-in-law, grasping her hand with my uninjured one. “I’m so sorry, Rory.”

She squeezed my hand back, wiping the tears off her cheeks.

“Don’t be.” She said. “If it weren’t for you and Lucas, Nico would be gone. The children would be gone. I would be gone. The two of you brought him home to me. Whatever happened, we will get through it.” She looked down at her own growing bump. “Our children will know their fathers, and that’s all I can ask for.”

I got myself to a seated position. “I need to see Lucas.” I had see for myself that he was alive. That he still existed.

“I know,” Rory sighed. “I told the nurse that you’ll want to see him when you wake up, so she brought a a wheelchair over. Do you think you can get out of the bed?”

I did, moving to the wheelchair without much protest. I felt drained, like I had run a marathon without stopping, and in my heart, I couldn’t process that it was all over.

My father was dead. Adrian was dead, and we were all alive. Injured, but alive.

Rory wheeled me into to Lucas’s bed in the ICU, and put the brakes on the wheelchair. “I’ll be right outside. If you need me, just say the word.” She said gently and helped me to my feet.

I nodded and gave her a grateful smile before looking down at the face of my beloved Lucas. My heart ached when I saw the lines connected to him. The sheet was pulled up to his chest, and I knew that underneath, he would be wrapped in bandages.

His eyes were still closed, and in that moment, I knew he was still fighting. Not to save me, but to save himself.

I wouldn’t leave him. I was going to be at his side for whatever came down the road. We had just survived an all-out war with my father. There wasn’t much that could top that.

Approaching the bed, I found his hand and clenched it in my own. “Lucas,” I said softly, rubbing my thumb over the top. “I’m right here, Lucas. I’m not going anywhere. So don’t you dare go anywhere either.”

His eyes fluttered opened. “Wasn’t planning on it.”

His words were raspy, but they were heaven sent. His eyes focused on mine. “Well,” he whispered. “Aren’t you a sight for sore eyes.”

The tears started, and I sobbed, pressing my forehead to his. “You’re alive.”

“With a lot more scars to add to the collection,” he said, his voice rough and weary. “Are you all right?”
