I pulled back and showed him my new accessory. “Just a broken wrist. Nothing more”

His throat worked. “I was so fucking scared to see you there,” he started. “I tried to get there in time, but part of me was afraid that I had been too late.”

“How?” I interrupted. “How did you manage all of this?”

“I think it was your brother who got to him first,” Lucas answered, grasping my hand in his. “When he told me he wanted to meet, he said that he made a deal with your brother to keep his family safe. He offered me their location in exchange for the title of Don.”

“And you gave that to him?”

“For you? Yeah. I did.” Lucas mustered a weak smile. “You and Nico were right about Adrian. The man was a coward, and his paranoia was key. In his fear, he couldn’t see clearly. Not like you and Nico. As soon as he showed me where Rory and the kids were, he sealed his own fate.”

I blew out a breath. “So it’s really over.”

“It is,” Lucas stated, grimacing as he tried to shift in the bed. “Though I would prefer holding you instead of lying in this fucking bed.”

“You can hold me forever,” I told him, my voice shaking. We were going to have a future. “Once we leave.”

“I can work with that,” he replied. “Though there are a shitload of things we have to figure out now.”

I knew what he meant. My father was dead, and so was the man who wanted to take over the Cavazzo Mafia. Normally the D’Agostino title would go to my brother, but he had denounced himself a long time ago.

By rights, it was mine to do as I wished with it. Even the guards who obeyed my orders in my last conscious moment in my father’s office seemed to believe so.

“I’m not ready to make any rash decisions,” I told Lucas.

“Well, this one shouldn’t be a rash one.” He said.

“Yeah?”

He nodded, his eyes softening. “Will you marry me?”

I choked on my own laughter. “What?”

“Will you marry me?” he repeated, squeezing my hand. “I know this is a shit proposal and I don’t have the right ring, but I don’t want to wake up another day and realize that I haven’t made you permanently mine. I know that our future isn’t completely laid out, but I want this to be part of it.”

How could I say no to that? “Yes,” I choked out, tears clogging my throat. “Yes, of course I will marry you.”

Lucas smiled and tugged on my hand until I lowered my head to his so that he could brush his lips over mine. “You are mine, my heart, my fucking soul, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”

“You always know exactly what to say,” I stated before pressing my lips to his. Our kiss was gentle and unhurried, the first time that neither of us had to worry about someone coming to steal the other away.

It truly was over. “I love you,” I gasped when we broke the kiss. “I love you so much.”

“I still need to get a proper ring,” he said, frowning.

“You can fix that at a later time,” I told him, earning a tired grin from Lucas. “And I want the biggest one you can find.”

Lucas arched a brow. “The biggest one, huh? I mean, you know, we might be out of a job.”

I sighed. “Okay. Then a moderate-sized diamond will work.”

The truth was, I didn’t care about the ring at all. I had all that I needed in Lucas’s love and utter devotion. We had our unborn child and a future that was free of my father. I didn’t know what that felt like, having been under his thumb for my entire life.

Lucas’s eyes held all the emotion that he had yet to speak, cupping my cheek with his other hand. “Our baby?”

“Is fine,” I told him, feeling the little one kick in response. “Alive, active, and can’t wait to meet their father.”

“Good,” he said. “Will you stay for a while?”

I nodded, and he motioned for me to sit on the bed, wincing as he tried to make room for me. “For you? I will stay until the end of time.”

“Mmm,” Lucas replied as he guided my head to his shoulder. “I like the sound of that.”
