“We have something great, and if you let things end without even hearing me out, you’re making a huge mistake. I think we belong together.” I relax a bit.

“Okay, so let me hear it.” I cross my arms but don’t invite him in.

“You’re right to be upset with me. I should’ve told you about Rachel. But honestly, when I was with you, work was the furthest thing from my mind. She is my ex, but I haven’t thought of her as anything other than a pain-in-the-ass co-worker in forever. I swear I wasn’t trying to keep anything from you, and I would never, ever cheat on you.” He says with a sigh. I can tell he’s being honest. He’s never given me a genuine reason to doubt him before.

“Okay.”

“Okay?”

“Okay, I believe you. I probably should’ve given you a chance to explain yourself when I found out, but I was too upset.” I sigh.

“Well, you don’t have to worry about me working with her anymore, or even working as much anymore.” He smiles.

“What do you mean?”Had he quit his job?

“I cut back my hours at work. I’ll be working normal hours and in a few months, they should move me downstairs to work with Louis again instead of Rachel. And trust me, she’ll be too busy to bother me now.” I stare at him in shock. Had he done that because of me? His job was everything to him.

“Is this because of me?” I ask unsteadily.

“Yes and no, I’m still working, but I hated not seeing you as much and not getting to be here with you. You’re the first person in my life to make me want to do this, but please don’t feel any pressure.” I can’t help the tears that fall. I knew how big of a gesture this was from him.

“I love you,” I whisper, and jump into his arms. He kisses me hard and pushes his way into the apartment. He’s about to close the door when he stops kissing me to turn around. Behind us is the Chinese food delivery guy awkwardly holding the door open.

“I’m, uh, sorry to interrupt, but I waited as long as I could.” He says, making Daniel and I realize he’s been there the whole time.

“I’m SO sorry.” My eyes go wide, and I hand him a handful of cash as Daniel takes the bag from him. I over tipped him, but he definitely deserved it. Poor kid.

“The poor guy.” Daniel breaks out into laughter the second the door shuts.

He drops the food on the table and scoops me into his arms. He carries me to the bedroom, and the look in his eye tells me he’s about to have his way with me. All of me is craving him. As I leaned into his kiss, I knew this was only the beginning of us.

“I don’t knowwhy you haven’t brought her around before. She’s lovely, Daniel.” Daniel’s mom says. It’s only a few weeks after being reunited, and Daniel thought it was time for me to meet his parents. He wanted me to meet his sister too, but she was living in New York.

“We’ve only been dating a few months, and you know how work was.” Daniel says, grinning at me. I had sweat through my dress on the ride over, nervous about meeting his parents, but he had assured me they would love me.

“Yes, thank goodness you convinced this one to stop working so much. I was worried it would send him to an early grave. Too much work isn’t good for someone.” His mom adds.

“It’s nice to see him have a life again, is what my dear wife means.” Daniel’s dad chuckles. I notice Daniel’s smile on her, but he definitely has his dad’s laugh.

“Alright, thank you for that.” Daniel rolls his eyes.

“So Daniel says you’re still in school?” His mom asks.

“Yes, I will graduate next week. I’ll be working interim jobs until I can get something more permanent.” I explain.

“What field are you in?” His dad asks.

“Social work. I’m hoping to work in a school or try to help in the foster care system.”

“Wow, that’s not an easy field.”

“Very commendable,” his mom asks.

“Thank you,” I blush. I wasn’t used to this much attention on myself.

“Well, let’s eat!” His mom laid out a table full of delicious-looking foods, including vegetarian options for me.

“I’ve never made anything vegetarian before, so I hope it came out alright,” his mom says as I dig into her eggplant Parmesan.
