“Well, you could’ve fooled me! It’s delicious. You’ll have to teach this one how to make it sometime.” I point my fork at Daniel. His cooking comprised leftover spaghetti and ordering out.

“Trust me, it might be better to keep that one out of the kitchen. He once almost burned down my kitchen making toast.” His mom laughs.

“Ma! I was eight.” Daniel defends himself.

“More like eighteen,” his dad whispers, and we all break out in laughter.

We spend the rest of dinner getting to know each other. It’s as easy as talking to my family. His parents are incredibly kind and funny, like Daniel. It’s almost midnight by the time we finally call it a night and decide to head home.

“Are we staying at your apartment or mine?” I ask sleepily from the passenger’s seat. We had a habit of switching whose apartment we stayed at most nights.

“What if we didn’t have to?”

“Uh, where would we sleep?” I ask, confused.

“What if we didn’t have to stay at mine or yours, and we just had ours?” He looks over at me with a smile on his face.

“Are you asking me to move in with you?” I sit up straight as if to make sure I heard him correctly.

“We’re together most nights, anyway. It just makes sense, but you can think about it.” He shrugs.

“Let’s do it.” I smile.

“Really?” He looks at me, surprised.

“Yeah, why not?” It’s probably one of the most impulsive things I’ve ever done, but Daniel makes me want to. I lived too much of my life playing things safe. I wanted to take the risk. Daniel was worth that risk because, for once, it didn’t feel like one.

Epilogue

“Are you sure about this, son?” My dad asks for the hundredth time.

“I really am, and this is important to me.” I’d only do this if he says yes. I already asked Holly’s dad over a very awkward conversation last time she was babysitting her nieces.

“Well, if you’re sure.” He nods and hands me the small red box.

“Thank you.” I give him a hug and open the box. It was perfect, nothing too gaudy, but big enough. She’d love that it was a family heirloom more than anything. It was my grandmother’s that she left to me before she passed.

“Don’t tell your mother until you do. She’s a little nervous about how fast you’re moving.” My dad sighs. I get it. It’s only been a few months, and we had just moved in together.

“I get it. I have a plan, but it’ll probably be a few weeks.” I assure him.

I close the box and put it safely in my jacket pocket. I’d just need to remember to take it out before laundry day. I also needed to figure out where to hide it now that I’d moved into Holly’s apartment.

Asking to move in together had been a slightly impulsive ask. I was high on my parents’ approval of her and spending more time with her. I thought she’d turn me down, tell me how it was too soon, but she surprised us both. We made it official a few weeks later, deciding to move my stuff into hers since she lived closer. I’d miss my apartment, but nothing compared to waking up next to her every morning.

“Babe?” I call out as I walk into the apartment.

“In here!” She calls back.

I follow her voice to the bedroom, and my eyes almost pop out of my head when I see her. She’s wearing this lace bodysuit thing that is almost completely see-through, and she’s laying on the bed waiting for me.

“Well, hello there.” I clear my throat.

“Hey there, I wanted to give you a proper welcome home.” She smirks, and my eyes trail her body. Her boobs are popping out of this outfit, her tan skin illuminating next to the pale pink fabric.

“I’m definitely happy to be home.” I almost jump into bed with her, but I realize the ring is still in my jacket. Quickly, I take it off and place it on the chair, hoping I remember to take the ring out later.

“Come show me,” she whispers in a sultry voice.
