“Yes, just a little jarred. I saw Cody last night.”

“Was that a good thing?” she asks uncertainly.

“I don’t know,” I admit. He wasn’t thrilled to see me, but he wasn’t angry with me.

“Okay, how do you think you’ll see him again?”

“He’s coming over tonight, to talk about the baby,” I explain.

“Oh, well, that’s good then. I was assuming it was his but maybe this can be a good thing. If he wants to be involved,” she says but I just nod.Was it a good thing?

Molly has to get my attention more than once during our weekly goals meeting. I apologize but honestly it is hard to stay on task with the thought of tonight on my mind. It feels like I am going to court completely unprepared. Speaking of, it hadn’t crossed my mind until now but is he going to sue for custody? Itishis baby, he does have some rights. Well, he will once paternity is established. I hadn’t considered it, but I don’t even know if we’ll be talking about full or joint custody. Maybe tonight is just a way to get a lawyer before smacking me with the custody agreement. No, that isn’t Cody. I know he isn’t mine anymore, but I can’t imagine him taking me to court in any realm.

By the time I get to my apartment, I’ve spent the entire day overthinking this conversation and I don’t feel any more prepared. My brain feels exhausted but I still need to be alert for Cody. I decide to take a nap. There’s still over an hour until he gets here since I got home early. I set an alarm and lay in my bed, willing myself to sleep so I can be a little less tired by the time he gets here.

Cody shows up exactly at five, which gave me fifteen minutes to wake up after my nap and go pee. He shows up with takeout to my favorite Chinese restaurant from near his place.

“I got your old favorites, I checked online to make sure it’s all stuff you can eat,” he explains.

“Thank you.” That is Cody, always thinking about someone else.

“We can eat and then talk or talk first, I don’t mind,” he says, sitting down at the table with me.

I grab one of the fried wontons and break it in half. The steam pours out of it as I dunk it in the sauce and take a bite. “We can talk and eat,” I say with my mouthful.

“Okay.” He nods. He reaches for an egg roll and I absentmindedly hand him the duck sauce. I know he likes to layer it in some.

“So what do you want to know?” I ask awkwardly.

“I hate to ask this, but considering our ending, I think I should. Would you be able to take a paternity test?”

I don’t speak. It makes sense, we broke up because I kissed someone else. Of course he’d want to make sure the baby was his. “Sure.” I nod.

“I uh, don’t know what you’re looking for but I’d like to be involved. I want to know her and spend time with her and be her dad, not just some creepy uncle she knows.”

“You’re her dad, I’d want that too.”

“Okay. What do you plan on doing while you’re at work?”

“Well, Molly and I left my old practice. I’m in the process of starting my own firm so as my own boss my schedule is flexible.”

“So you don’t work with Parker anymore?” he asks, surprised.

“Nope.” I hadn’t even heard his name in months. I can’t help myself so I ask, “Are you seeing anyone?”

“No, not since you.” His eyes meet mine.

“What about the blonde from yesterday?” I ask.

“She’s my realtor, she was supposed to show me places in the city. She happened to show me a place in Sawyer’s building so I thought it would be rude not to stop by. I hadn’t planned on going,” he explains.

“Oh.” That made sense. “You’re moving?”

“I was looking for a different place, my landlord raised the rent again and for a one bedroom it’s not worth it.”

“I get it.” I nod, biting off a piece of broccoli off my fork.

“I should probably start looking for something with two bedrooms though,” he says to himself.
