“Oh damn, she’s got herself some kick.” Cody’s eyes go wide.

“The next Mia Thermalopis,” I joke.

“Is that the one from thePrincess Diariesmovies?” I don’t know which part is more shocking, that I got a sports reference wrong or Cody knows the name of the princess from thePrincess Diaries. I can’t help but crack up.

“Hey, don’t laugh!” He laughs too. Kick, kick, kick, SLAM.

“Oh shit, ouch man.” I frown, that was a hard kick.

“Does she usually only kick when your laughing?”

“No, is that what she was doing?”

“Yes, anytime I made you laugh she’d kick directly after.” He smiles.

“I didn’t realize,” I say, looking up into his light eyes. His hand is still on my stomach, waiting to see if his theory is correct. But his eyes are locked into mine. It is like last night all over again. I pull back gently, his hand still on me but he realizes and pulls away too. I hate this is how we have to be.

Cody finishes his lunch and goes back to work on the nursery while I hide out in my room. I get some work done on my laptop, emailing Molly back about the temp we interviewed last week. I need to settle on a replacement for myself and we need to get a few more higher paying clients to make our work for the lower paying clients profitable. I’m writing up another email when I head a loud thud and Cody call for help.

I jump up and run toward the nursery. In there, the smaller bookcase he was attempting to attach to the wall is on his foot, his eyes wide in pain. He is trying to push it off him but with the angle, there is no way for him to move it. I step in, push it out of the way, and look at his foot. It is clearly broken, already bruising and swelling in just the few seconds since it got free. If I am being honest, it looks disgusting.

“We need to get you to the hospital.” I help him to the ground so he can sit and put his foot up while I grab my phone to call for help.

“It’s probably just sprained,” Cody says, shrugging.

“That thing is gross, you need medical attention, PLEASE.”

“Okay, okay.” He nods.

It’s a blur as the paramedics come in, helping Cody onto a gurney and asking us for specific details.

“Is your wife coming in the ambulance?” the medic asks Cody.

“Yes, I am.” I nod. Ignoring the wife comment, I just wanted to make sure he was okay.

I call Sawyer and Riley on the way, who tell us they’ll meet us there just in case we need anything. We lie to the front desk and because of my pregnant belly and glare, they don’t question our different last names or the legality of our ‘marriage’. I just want to stay with him as long as I can. When they take him to X-ray, I wait in the emergency room.

“Luna!” Sawyer calls and she runs over to me.

“He’s okay, but he probably broke his foot, in at least a few places.”

“What the hell was he doing?” she asks shaking her head.

“Attaching a bookcase to the wall in the nursery. I thought he knew what he was doing but apparently he didn’t think wearing shoes was important.” I think about how the EMT told him over and over how important shoes are when doing work like that.

“I’m going to kill him if he’s okay.” She sighs. I appreciate how much she loves Cody. She was here almost as quickly as we were in the ambulance.

“Me too.” I rub my belly, I don’t like feeling this anxious about him.

A nurse is wheeling him back to us and he smiles, seeing Sawyer here. As soon as the nurse walks away, she smacks him on the back of the head.

“What’s wrong with you?!”

“Well, now a headache and a broken foot,” he says, rubbing the back of his head.

A nurse comes back in to help him into the bed. She lets us know a doctor will be coming in soon and to remind us about the one visitor policy.

“I can go.” I stand up.
