“No!” Cody says. Sawyer and I look at him for more instructions.

“Can you stay? For now?” He looks at me.

“I’m cool, Rileys on her way so I can wait outside.” Sawyer smiles.

“Okay.” I nod sitting in the chair closer to him.

“You okay?” he asks.

“I think I’m the one who’s supposed to be asking you that.” I chuckle.

“You lifted an entire bookcase to help me, I need to know you’re okay.”

“I’m fine, I had a moment where I just needed to help.” I shrug.

“So, it looks like you have a broken foot, just as we suspected. You’ll need to stay off it for at least the next four to six weeks,” the doctor says walking in.

“I live alone, wouldn’t that be an issue?”

“Don’t you have anyone to help you out?” the doctor asks confused. Cody had taken my hand in his, I am clearly pregnant but nope, sorry doc, we don’t live together.

“You can stay with me,” I say without thinking about it.

“Luna,” he starts, but the doctor cuts him off.

“Great! We can have you discharged in an hour then.” He leaves before either one of us have a second to consider what we just agreed to.

“You don’t have to do this, I can stay with Sawyer I’m sure. She owes me.” He chuckles.

“No, it’s okay. I can. I want to.” I smile. Although it’s getting increasingly hard to ignore how I feel about him.

Chapter Twenty-Eight

At this point in my pregnancy, I can’t see my feet so Molly and I decide it is best I work from home. Plus I have been taking care of Cody for the last seven weeks. Although it is more like we are taking care of each other. I’ve just hit my thirty-eight weeks and I am ready for the baby to come out. She is getting too big and there is only so much my skin could stretch.

“Are you ready?” Cody looks at me and I realize something’s different. He had an appointment this morning to check on his foot that he insisted going to alone, but now the boot was off.

“The boot’s off!” I would not miss that loud and clunky thing.

“Yes, doc said I’m all healed,” he says proudly, hugging me.

I’d be lying if I said things weren’t different between us. Cody and I have basically been living together for the last few weeks. Which opened up this door to show me what life might be like with him and honestly, it isn’t as scary as I thought. He is by my side for every weird pregnancy symptom, ordering me Uber eats at three am since he couldn’t get it himself. He’d slept on the couch. A lot of nights we found ourselves watching movies all day long until one of us, usually me, fell asleep. Neither of us talked about being anything more, but it is clear there is something happening.

Today I have my last sonogram appointment. They are going to check her measurements and maybe tell me when she might be coming out. I am incredibly excited for this appointment. So much so, that I asked Cody to join me. It is intimate, but I thought he should at least get to see his daughter once. He is more than thrilled when I ask. Though in retrospect, I shouldn’t have asked when he was carrying anything because a book almost took out his other foot.

“Are you ready to go? We’re going to be late.” He looks at his watch. I can’t tell if he’s excited or nervous.

“Yes, it’s not like they can start without me.” I chuckle.

“Okay, there’s the feet and her five, ten toes.” The doctor points at the screen. Cody takes my hand, smiling, watching intently. I can see his eyes starting to water but I don’t want to embarrass him.

“Is everything okay?” he asks.

“Yes, your baby girl is perfectly healthy and good to come any day now.” The doctor smiles. She finishes taking measurements and gives us each a new sonogram to take home.

“Stop for food?” Cody asks as we leave the doctor’s office.

“Can we order something instead?” I suggest. I am suddenly really tired.
