“Are you good now?” Keni asks. I barely raise my arm but wave my hand back and forth.

“If she is puking, she is not getting in my car.” The driver says, rushing back to the driver's side door, gets in, and slams the door. The locks click, so we can’t get in.

“Fuck you! Asshole, this is part of your job.” Nicki yells, and Keni joins the argument. I can’t deal with this shit. I start walking down Cedar Lane. I need to get home and climb into bed. If I make it to Teaneck Road, make a right, and keep walking, eventually, I’ll get there.

I’m not sure how long I was walking when I suddenly heard screaming from behind me.

“It’s your fault, asshole. How could you do this to her?” I stop and turn around, a little more sober from all the walking.

When I figure out my surroundings, I realize I’m about halfway home. Maybe I haven’t walked as far as I thought?

Keni walks up, “are you okay? We’ve been following you. Figured you needed some time for yourself.” Nicki is arguing with Jacob in the far corner. He climbs from the car and gets in her face. Oh, fuck no!

I take off as fast as I can and go straight for him.

“Don’t you get all up in her face,” I yell, grabbing his shoulder and spinning him around right into a right hook. He stumbles back. I look to Nicki to make sure she’s okay.

“Dani, I’m fine. He would never hurt me. It was me. I was yelling at him.” She rambles off quickly, helping him stabilize.

“Well, I don’t give a fuck. You fuck with one Johnson sister. You fuck with us all. Go home, Jacob.” I point back to his car. I can’t deal with him right now. I won’t.

He retreats, holding his cheek, his eyes wide with disbelief. “You fucking hit me,” he curses. The anger resonates off him. “After everything, we have been through, are you willing to throw it all away?” I turn to walk away, “just go, Jacob,” the tears begin to build. There is a small commotion behind me, then I hear the car door close and the car pull away.

“Damn Dani, you sucker-punched him.” Nicki starts laughing, and we all can’t help but join her. We sit on the corner curb and just laugh. My laughter soon becomes tears.

“Yeah, well. It was payback. He sucker-punched my heart.” Everyone’s attention is on me, and I’m done having a pity party. I stand, dust my jeans off and start walking again.

“Come on, girls, I have that damn test tomorrow. I need to get some sleep.” With that, Diesel pulls up, “get in the car, girls,” he says, flexing. “Thanks, D,” Nicki leans over and kisses his cheek.

“He’s staying by me for a few days.” Diesel says, with a glance through the rearview mirror, “Nice hit, by the way, Dani.” I feel my cheeks flush, “well, don’t fuck with a Johnson girl.” I state, lean back, and look out the side window until I get home.

I jog up the stairs, across the courtyard, and into my building with a quick thanks. I don’t even bother to undress. It doesn’t take long before I’m fast asleep. Or maybe after all my emotions and alcohol, I pass out. Either way, my sisters had my back and got me home safely.
