Chapter one

Ugly Rite of Passage

Aaron

I’veneverbeenthisnervous. Never freaked out before kissing a girl or asking her out or even going on a first date.

But this isn’t some girl.

It’s Rae.

I was riding my post-win confidence when I kissed her on the hood of my truck last week. It wasn’t something I was planning, but I was planning to talk to her about us or make some kind of move.

The problem is, that high wore off before we got a chance to talk, and since then, we’ve been awkwardly dancing around what happened. I kissed her. I need to be the one to say something.

And I’m going to. Hence the nervousness.

We’re going to a party tonight. Knowing Rae, she wants nothing to do with it. So, I’m going to steal her away, take her for a walk, talk about the kiss, and hopefully, by the end of the night, she’ll be my girlfriend.

My stomach warms in anticipation and my dick joins the party—excited he might finally getexactlywhat he wants. Even though I have no intention of rushing that.

“Hey. You ready to go?” Joel smacks my shoulder, catching me off guard and making me jump. He laughs like the asshole he is. “Are you nervous?” He sings the last word, making me want to hit him.

I clear my throat. I haven’t talked to the guys about this. After everything that’s happened over the last year, I’ve decided everyone else is way too involved and invested in whatever this is with Rae and me. “No. You just surprised me.”

“Dude, you are the worst liar. Besides, I know about the kiss.”

My eyes go wide, making Miles laugh loudly from behind him.

“You do?” I croak.

“Yeah. She told me.”

I nod, holding back the urge to question him like the fucking CIA about what she might’ve told him. But if I want them to stay out of it, I have to set the example. Even if it’s killing me.

“And Trev told me. He saw you two going at it,” Miles says, patting my shoulder proudly.

“Okay, you can both fuck off now. My relationship with Rae is not your business.”

Joel wags his finger at me. “See, that’s where you’re wrong. We’re inevitably going to have to see it and deal with any drama that comes from it.”

I run my hand through my hair in frustration. “Look, I haven’t gotten to talk to Rae about this yet, so please just let it go. I’m not discussing it with you assholes until after I’ve talked to her. Got it?”

They exchange a glance but don’t say anything.

Pushing between them, I say, “Good. Let’s go.”

Time to get my girl.

Time to make hermygirl.

Rae

“Are you going to say something?” Sarah asks me as she, Mackenzie, and I get ready for a party to celebrate the end of the school year. I can’t believe we’re going to be seniors. It’s surreal.

“Or maybe you shoulddosomething,” Mackie says.

I stop messing with my hair and let out a sigh. “I’m not sure.”
