“Maybe.”

Joel gives me a piercing gaze, and I relent.

“Fine. But lunch first. I can’t go into this hangry. When we get back, we’ll look for him.”

Joel smiles and throws an arm over my shoulder. “Deal.”

I roll my eyes and poke him in the ribs, making him jump and laugh.

We stroll outside, laughing and chatting—Joel has the ability to do that to me, even when I feel like shit. Probably that Wilkinson boy charm. Jesse tends to have the same effect, but usually he adds somechemistryinto the mix.

I’m feeling a little calmer, but I’m worried about Aaron. He said he wanted to talk this morning, and I could see the pain in his eyes. It took everything in me not to pull him into my arms. Now I’m wondering if I should have.

“Where are you parked?” I ask Joel.

“By the soccer field.”

My eyes drift in that direction, and I stop in my tracks.

Every time I think I should let him back in…

“Rae Rae?”

Joel follows my gaze and sees Aaron standing next to his truckwith Caity. Not just with her. They’ve been hugging this whole time. She pushes on her toes and kisses his cheek, not letting him go.

Shaking my head, I look at Joel. “I should talk to him, right? Before or after he peels himself off Caity?”

Then I turn on my heel and walk away. BecauseI’m done.

After eating lunch alone in the library, I made it to sixth period, which is history with Joel. Thankfully, he stopped trying to talk to me about anything related to Aaron. Now I’m sitting in seventh period which is health and wellness class on opposite days from gym class. And, unfortunately, I have this class with Aaronand Caity. Ugh. After what I witnessed, I’d rather have detention for skipping it the rest of the year. Thankfully, Nick and Trevor are also in this class with me.

Today, instead of sitting where I normally do, behind the seat Aaron sits in, where I’d stare at his sexy back muscles and poke his shoulder with my pen to annoy him, I sit on the far side of the room in the empty seat behind where Trevor normally sits.

I put my head down on the desk and try to avoid seeing Aaron.

A few minutes later, I feel a tap on my head, then hear Trevor’s voice. “What are you doing?”

“Sleeping. Wake me when class starts. Or never. That sounds good, too.”

“Rae…”

I sit up and look at him.

“Why are you sitting over here?”

That’s when Aaron walks in with Caity. Tears rush to my eyes.

“Okay, what’s going on?” Trevor asks.

“Seriously, you’ve looked like a wreck all day,” Nick says, sliding into the seat next to me. “What’s wrong?”

“So do you,” I shoot back.

He flicks my arm. “That’s because I never sleep anymore. You don’t live with a two-month-old, so why don’t you tell us what’s going on?”

“Aaron and I had a thing.”

Trevor and Nick exchange a glance. “What kind ofthing?” Trevor asks.
