“You’ll never need it to,” I say, kissing her forehead.

“I love you,” she whispers, emotion filling her voice.

“I love you, too, Rae. Tonight has been amazing in every way. I’m glad every second was with you.”

After cleaning up, we nestle under the covers, and I wrap my arms tightly around her, reveling in the feeling of falling asleep next to my best friend, my person, the girl I love, naked for the first time. Hands down one of the best days of my life so far.

There are a lot of uncertainties in my life right now, but Rae and my friends are not included on that list. As we walk through Joel’s backyard hand-in-hand, her in a sinful pink and black bikini and me in swim trunks, I feel the rush of excitement summer always brings. I’m acutely aware at this moment how lucky I am, and I know this is going to be one of the best summers of my life.

We stroll through Joel’s back door and hear whispering. Since Rae and I left first last night, we have no idea how the rest of the group split off, but we all agreed to meet here this afternoon for swimming and grilling.

“Technically, we made the agreement after midnight, which means…” Joel’s voice is cut off by the sound of kissing.

Rae and I glance at each other.

“Today,” Sarah breathes. “So enjoy me while you have me.”

“Did I not make it clear how much I enjoyed you last night?” Rae stops in her tracks, listening intently to Joel’s hushed voice. “When your hand was on my—”

I’ve heard enough.

Loudly, I call, “Hello?”

All conversation drops and Sarah and Joel scuttle into the room. Rae and Sarah exchange some sort of telepathic sister conversation, leaving them both staring and smirking. Joel cocks an eyebrow at me, and I’m sure the giant smile on my face gives awayexactlywhat Rae and I did last night. And once this morning, too. Pretty cool to wake up with morning wood and have your girl right there wanting toutilizeit.

Before anyone says anything, Miles walks in the back door, a bag of groceries in his hand. He stops as he takes us in.

“Jesus, did everyone get laid last night except me?”

Sarah’s cheeks turn pink. “I—we—didn’t,” she sputters. Then she clears her throat. “Didn’t you sneak off with someone at prom?”

Miles smirks. “Yeah. Just a bathroom quickie, though. Too bad my date abandoned me last night for some girl,” he says loudly as Mackie walks in the back door.

All of our eyes go to her.

She stops short and looks around before blurting out, “I slept with Hyla. Twice.”

The girls screech and start asking a thousand questions, so Miles, Joel, and I unpack the groceries.

Miles glances at me. “Youdefinitelygot laid last night.”

I stare at him, trying to contain my stupid-ass smile. “I thought we were gentlemen who don’t,” I cough, “and tell.”

He chuckles and slaps me on the shoulder. “Your face clearly made no such agreement. Anyway, glad you guys are happy.”

Turning around, I lean against the counter and watch my girl.

The happiness I feel with her is unparalleled by anything else.

So why do I still feel this nagging weight in my chest?
