Aaron wraps his arms tightly around me in our special spot on the couch. That tingly feeling runs through me, and I remember the first time I ever held his hand just over thirteen years ago.
What a journey we’ve had since then.
I remember thinking when he held my hand that it felt like I’d always known him and like I’d know him forever.
So much has changed between us and yet so much hasn’t. Our love was always there. It always will be.
He wraps his arms around me and whispers in my ear, “Goodnight, Beautiful. I love you.”
“I love you too, Ace.”
He squeezes me tightly and I feel him drift off to sleep quickly.
I look around the room.
A room where I have spent so many nights laughing hysterically. A house where I’ve experienced some of my best and worst moments. So much has happened in the last year. It’s changed us and defined us and made us stronger.
When I first met them all those years ago, I had no idea that we would end up friends like this. So much more than friends. They’re my tribe, the people I couldn’t live without, my family.
I look around at them sleeping happily.
And even though I feel cozy and am in the safest place in the world, I can’t seem to fall asleep.
A million thoughts run through my mind.
How lucky I am to have my best friends. To have Aaron. Nothing can break this. We’ve made it through a lot together. That won’t change.
But…
Will we still have nights like this?
Will we change as we get older?
What will college be like?
How will we all adjust?
Are we ready?
Am I?
Then I start to feel antsy, almost worried. I don’t like uncertainty. I never have.
What happens next?
I run my hand over Aaron’s arms and squeeze him tightly.
He rustles slightly and whispers, “Go to sleep. It’s going to be okay.”
I smile at how well he knows me and give his arm a little squeeze.
I look around the room again.
This is the end of something.
But it’s also the beginning.
And even though in some ways it scares me… I also can’t wait.
